Cover for wooden bow grip???????????????
« on: August 05, 2007, 09:41:00 PM »
I have a bow with a bare wooden grip, and another with a wrapped grip. The bow with the bare grip hurts my the thumb, while I do not have as much discomfort from the wrapped handle. I have a "trigger thumb" that will come out of joint and eventually lock up causing me to recieve a painful shot to heal. I shoot with a padded glove and thought adding a wrap to this handle would also help. I shot with a man, Charles, at Tannehill this weekend and he had a wrap on the bow he added. It did not dawn on me to ask him about his at the time. Any suggestions???

Thanks,
Jimmy

There's so many options for grips that are beautiful and functional; leather, alligator skin, beavertail, etc...You can always look into getting either handball tape or baseball bat grip tape for a firm and cushioned grip.  Not the prettiest, but it gets the job done.

I have never used it but, I know that there are a couple of different types of rubber handle wraps available. I would first try Three Rivers Achery to see what they have and then you might check out a local sporting goods store for the material that is used on different sports equipment such as grips on baseball bats or tennis racquet handles.

on my sons bowfishing bow I put a rubber grip made from a 5" piece of bicycle innertube. I rolled it down the limb and on the grip, seems to work well.

good luck!!

I recently got a bow from another tradganger. the handle was wrapped with what looks like thin leather cord (for lack of a better term) its just wrapped around the handle like the serving is on the string. It looks great and I imagine you could do it with any leather strips. The one he used is maybe 1/8 wide. You could use other widths and/or thicknesses.

Just a thought.

You could also build up the handle with leather to make it easier on your thumb. Just add leather on top of leather then shape to the desired shape.  Then cover it with a wraped leather grip. I think there was a pictoral done on this a while ago.
