Labrum and RC surgery coming up...
« on: July 25, 2012, 10:05:00 PM »
Well yesterday I was informed that I had a torn labrum and a frayed rotator cuff, and I will have surgery on Monday... Today my new lynx came in.. All I can do now is stare at the beaut..It will be done on my drawing sholder.. For those of you who have had the same surgery, how long was it before you were shooting normal again? My Doc said I would be in a sling for 3 weeks, then about 9-12 weeks of rehab.. I plan on doing EXACTLY what the Doc and the PT says.. I was wondering if there would be any hope of shooting by December, for I have 3 weeks vacation then..If not, then I will have to knock the dust off the ole 30 30..

The speed at which you recover depends on many things.  The stronger you are before you go into surgery, the faster you will recover, provided you do exactly what your orthopod and PT tell you to do.  Another thing is age; the older you are, the slower your recovery.  Skill of the surgeon and PT play a role here, but the biggest factor is you.
I would say that December is not out of the question, provided you do exactly as you are told (not less, and not more; soreness is okay, but pain is the bodies way of saying "stop that, damnit!").

Good luck,

D

I had a bad accident at work and my injury's included alot more then the labrum and rotator but they were fixed also during the surgery. Did what the doctors told me to stayed with the PT and finished it all.

I had surgery June 27th and was back up to hunting wieght by November. I had pain for along time but it finally went away and my shoulder is awesome. I'm sure glad I didnt push it and re injure it like alot of guys do.

Good luck to you and I hope you have a full recovery.      :)

I had a very similar surgery. It took 3 months until I could start pulling 25-30 lb bows. About 6 months to get back to 50 lbs. I am very fit by most standards.

Sad story... mine tore again at about a year. Now, I have a defect in my shoulder that predisposes me to this issue. I now shoot lefty and I am VERY glad I swapped.

I had the same surgery and sounds like the Doc is in the ballpark.  Your mileage may vary.  If they're honest they will admit they often don't know the extent of what they have to do until they get in there with the arthroscope.  That procedure has come a long way in a few years(I've had 3 in all...1 left, 2 right). My labrum repair required a not-so-small incision, but now I think the just work through the scope hole. Go the neck nerve block route and you can watch their progress on the T.V. screen, give advice, ask questions....they love coaching! LOL My Doc told me the more I used it (within reason), the less scar tissue I'd have and the quicker my range of motion would return.  I was shooting again in less time than he's telling you, but don't push it....he also told me if I was a horse they'd just shoot me!

I had a rotator cuff surgury and 3 tendons reattached in early may.It was the the most painfull surgury i have had .[ i have had 2 back surgurys and a spinal fusion] The Doc and PT are telling me 9 months to a year before I am 80 percent or better. The progress has been slow but each day there is progress.GOOD LUCK to you.

I was back to hunting weight bows about four months after reconstruction on my left shoulder.  Listen to your doc and pt, and maybe pick up a lighter "rehab bow".

Do the PT! And listen to your therapy advice. I had a complete tear on my bow shoulder, and let my shoulder freeze up while trying to keep hunting. Had to have it "manipulated". I am 90 days out of surgery, and can shoot a 25#bow. Probably more, but I am taking it slow, and continuing to do my therapy at home. One thing that really helped was getting the area cool after surgery. I bought a circulating ice water pump. Great!
Best of luck to ya, and I am sure you will do your part to get
Back to shooting. That was my motivation. Tell your therapy people your motivation. They will work for you.
