Scrub Bull Advice Needed
« on: August 04, 2012, 06:53:00 PM »
So my birthday was a few days ago and my girlfriend told me I might have to wait a little for a present.

This morning she tells me she has organised a 6-7 day hunt for a scrub bull in Cairns Australia (couldn't afford a buffalo)with free pigs and barramundi fishing thrown in!!!!!
To say I am in a state of shock is an understatement!

This is a dream hunt for me, but the catch is she can only afford it because it is a cancellation and it is around the 23rd of September... Not too much time to prepare!
This might be a one off chance for me and I really want to do it with a trad bow (haven't shot a compound for about a year now)I need advice on arrow weight and poundage.

I am currently shooting a 60# @ 28" PSE Heritage Raven and I draw right around 28. I just worked up some carbons which are Easton Powerflight 340's 30.5" with 100grain inserts and 125grain heads. Gives me 534 grains. These fly really well and much faster than my previous aluminium set up Which was 30" XX75"s with 250Grains up front and gave me 680 grains.

I don't feel like my bow is the fastest around for that weight and I really like the extra speed I get from the lighter arrows.

I would like advice on whether 60lbs is enough for scrub bulls and what arrow weight is good enough. I am thinking go back to my heavier set up, but do I need to go even heavier?
I know Scrub Bulls are not as tough as Buffalo but they are plenty tough and mean enough for me!

Happy to buy new arrows for this, maybe look at the FMJ's or FMJ Dangerous games?

I always thought if I did a hunt like this it would be well planned out and I would work into a heavier and or more efficient bow for it.
I would love to buy a new bow for the hunt but realistically I doubt I could decide on one, get it here, and get set up in time to be shooting well and go on this hunt.

HELP! All advice or opinions are welcome.

Scrub Bulls: 85# recurve - 1100 grain arrow - see if you could possibly borrow a setup - not enough time really to develop at this point.
Sorry Dude - 60# enough ? maybe - and doubt it - I don't play maybe.
Lots of guys on here will tell you its enough - I recommend only taking advice from folks who have actually Done It.
Best of luck though and if you need more info give me a shout.

It's a cow.  Plain and simple. Just a meaner one.

When I went to Queensland last year for boars and bulls, I asked Andy if my setup (57#, 560gr arrows) was enough for the scrubbers.  He said my setup would be fine, just to limit my shots to 20yds or less.

I never did connect with a scrub bull while I was there,  but I trust Andys word that my setup was fine and would have done its job, as long as I done mine.

Given your situation I'd go with the heavier shaft and put careful consideration into your choice of broadheads.

shot with 55# samick deer slayer, 580gr GT arrows with 100gr insert and 250gr head. 15 yard shot. arrow went in to the feathers and the broadhead was out the off side.
your bow is fine. i would try and bump your arrow weight up a little to 580-650gr. i would suggest a heavier head for your carbons. try a 100-125gr adapter and 125gr+ head, this will bump your weight up to the 600+gr mark, then just retune your arrows. solid 2 blade head about 1 1/8" wide. get them sharp as always and shoot broadside or quartering away under 20 yards. well put together pig setups are fine for bulls with shot placement.
hit yours where i hit mine and you'll watch it go down.
have a great trip and show us the pics

You have already received the right info, as Charlie said make sure you choose the right two blade broadhead & make it scary sharp if you can't sharpen it that way get someone to do it that can & as Clint said keep your weight up around 650 grains & choose your shot & distance  correctly. As Cam said it is just a cow but a bigger meaner one that can cause a lot  of damage given the opportunity. They are not as thick skinned as a buff but still heavy boned. 60#, 650gr arrow with razor sharp heavy two blade, shot under twenty yards, but most importantly put the arrow in the right place. Then you should be ok.

I would try and get at least a 600-650 grain arrow with around 200-250 grains plus up front with a scary sharp 2 blade single bevel head.

I killed the Bison in my avatar with a 63# Robertson recurve, arrow was a laminated burch with a 200 gr ace Super express two blade, total arrow weight was around 800 gr. I hit the elbow, went straight through and centered the heart. He was down in seconds. The head was still sharp when I retrieved it from inside the bull. Get you arrow weight up a bit and make sure your broadhead is scary sharp as advised above and you should be fine as long as you do your part.

Thanks guys.
As you can imagine I have hardly been able to sleep thinking about this. Time to play around a little with my arrow set ups.
