ACS A&H (torn rotator)
« on: August 05, 2012, 10:42:00 AM »
So I have screwed up, and tore my rotator cuff.  In a sling for 6 weeks, and rehab for months.  Been shooting trad for 7 years.

I blame my widow longbow 64lbs and my zipper 62lbs for this.  I have had issues with soreness and pain for 2 years. This year, I practiced everyday until my shoulder ached.

So I dropped to a 52lb zipper ext.  Thinking after this recovery dropping some more.  I hate to get rid of my 62lb zipper, but might have too.

Would using a bow like a ACS make up for performance at 42-45lbs?  I would like to stay shooting 175fps like my zippers did with 10gpp.  But would like to still shoot 550gr arrows so more like 12gpp.  I never really was into the modern bows like ACS or hoyt's.

Think real hard before getting this surgery.  I can ride my motorcycle this year, can't do much of anything.

Up date your Zippers form the Classic limbs to the carbon and foam Evolution limbs. Problem solved!
I shoot 12 grains per pound at my 28" drawlength in the low 170's, not a problem.

Wow Bill! that is pretty darn quick for 12 gpp. Big Country to answer your question I don't think you are going to get a 10# increase in performance from an ACS or any other high performance custom bow over another brand high performance brand. You might see a few feet per second with one over the other. In my experience it has been that it is more important that the bow fit the shooter. One person may get more performance out of one bow while you get better performance from another bow.

Bigcountry, I feel you bro!   I'm having some shoulder issues too.

Thanks Bill, But would I get the performance out of that standard riser you just made for me last year?

I also have an ext riser too.

My story is lame compared to yours, but I strained my bicep tendon stringing my new 50# bow last Christmas, and could only shoot my 35# until June.  I kept trying the 50# every few weeks and couldn't do it.  Didn't realize how slow tendons heal.  I'm in good health, but 42 not 19 anymore, ouch.  Good luck and heal fast.
Maddog Mountaineer 57# and Prairie Predator 52# Wow!, Samick Sage 35 - 60#,  I'm learning.

Thanks for the experiences.  I would have never dreamed it would be such an uphill road to recovery and shooting again.  All in God's plan I suppose.

My ACS is 49@28 and I draw a solid 28.  At 10 grains per inch (490 grain arrow) I'm right at 175 fps.   That's using a 12 strand dyna flight string and wool silencers.  All chronos are a little different but that should give you an idea of performance.

I had both my shoulders cleaned out.  I did not have any tears just your typical impingement, bone spurs and buristis sac issues.  It took a good 3 months to get back to a 50lb bow.   If you've got a tear you'd better take it easy.

Mark,I'll have to put a set of limbs on a standard riser and shoot them from the shooting machine. That way it will take the human (me) out of the equation. Just about a month ago I shot a stock SXT throught the crono. for a customer. Off the shooting machine so it was repeatable. With 10 grains per pound, drawn to 28" it shot 190 fps.
Shooting bows through the crono. by hand is tricky. 5 different guys with 28" drawlengths could shoot the same bow with the same arrow and get 5 completely different numbers. As Tim said crono's themselves can be tricky especially if you do not have a good light source.
