year of make of Big Horn recurve
« on: August 12, 2012, 10:38:00 AM »
I have picked up a Big Horn takedown recurve that has the serial number 1094 on it and has the slight curve where the limbs meet the riser.Iam trying to find out what year this bow was built.I had a one built in 1995 and this one is slightly narrower than the 95 one. What should the brace height be set at? It felt as the bow bottom out just to get the string on and the brace height reads six and a quarter inches.at the back of the sit window. Can anyone help a fellow stickman out?

If the limb beds are curved its made when G Fred owned Bighorn before 1991. I've had a couple of Bighorns made after this but never the curved bed models.

It would be helpful to know the length of the bow.
If it's a curved limb bed, brace height should be 6 3/4 inches + or - from back of sight window to string. At least that is a good starting point.

FWIW - I have one that G. Fred made for me in July of 1984 that has serial number 1765.

Dave,
If my memory is correct the curved limb beds were pre 1989, so your's could be a 1989 later model or 1990. That is also right around the time King Cavalier bought Bighorn, but I know Fred was still involved during the transition.
Sorry I couldn't be more specific.

and if thats not confusing enough, there were two different styles of curved limb bed, changed sometime between 84 and 87
The "87" or later curved bed measures 1 5/8 width, and limbs angle forward a lot more then the earlier model

earlier model measures 1 3/8 width

so if you put limbs on from the earlier model on the later model they will gain about 10 pounds because of the limb angle

and Pat is right the straight limb bed was between 87 -90

lots of changes in limb configurations- design as
well

Ah those were the days, many a fine critter fell to those bows.
