Zwickey Eskimo vrs Magnus Classic
« on: August 12, 2012, 02:52:00 PM »
It seems to be a lot easier to sharpen the Magnus to a shaving edge. Does anyone know why? They are very similar designs. I'm wondering if the difference is in the metal?

I think the Magnus is slightly softer on the rockwell scale. Not sure though.

We have used both in the past, the Magnus head used to be harder than the Zwickey that may have changed since then. The Magnus comes a bit sharper out of the pack and can be easily whipped into hunting sharpness with just a carbide sharpener, provided the angles match. It is possible that you may be getting something off on the Zwickey, I have found with the people that I help get into this that when it comes time to get a broadhead that has been shot into a target a few times for practice, that the Zwickey is easier for them to get back to shaving sharp versus the Magnus after it they have been used for target practice.  It think what you are dealing with is initial sharpness and a bevel angle that suits your method. Either way, they both work about as well on game.

Absolutely no knock on Zwickeys, but I have had better luck with the Magnus heads. That said, I think Magnus stopped making the trad heads? I could be wrong.

Thanks for the help guys. It seems that I can get the Zwickeys as sharp. I'm just having to remove a little more metal.

I've used both and we've sold both.  My pick is Zwickey but it comes down to personal preference, both are great heads.

The Magnus are more sharpening friendly for most people, but then again the Zwickey is GREEN!  :D

Thundervalley archery is now making the magnus trad line of heads.  3rivers has them back in their catalog and online.  Google Thundervalleyarchery...you can purchase the heads directly from them as well.

I'm set for wensel woodsman 150's for my elk hunt this August...but I think I'm going to get some Magnus 1's to play with for deer.  A 1.5" cut should be devastating for whitetails.

the bevels on the zwickeys need some serious grinding to get them even.   Once you get there, they're easy.  I also thought the magnus were harder.
