Resurgance of archery (newscast)
« on: August 18, 2012, 11:34:00 AM »
Saw a story on the local Portland news this morning about the sudden popularity of archery due to recent movies coming out of Hollywood. Even showed John Strunk shaving on a stave in his shop and shooting a few arrows from one of his beautiful bows! Much better then all the doom and gloom political propaganda the news usually talks about!

Here's a link if anyone would link to read it...

There's nothing in the world that makes me happier than seeing kids shooting bows.  Thanks for the link!

Here's a couple pics that are related.  These are my daughters Emily and Laine shooting the actual bow from "Hunger Games".  I got it to use for reference as I make the Hunger Game 2 bows.

And even cooler, here's my very own Katniss helping her Aunt Jo (who is in stage 4 metastatic breast cancer, no don't cry for her) accomplishing an unanticipated bucket list item.

Peace my brothers and sisters. Live life!
Take a kid hunting!

Great link. I am currently making arrows for a 60's Bear Cub so my 10 year old grand daughter can learn to shoot. I just love it when todays youth take an interest in our wonderful sport and lifestyle.

I am vice president of my local archery range.  I live in a large gated community of about 8000 people.  Basically a small town though we are a "country club" and not an incorporated town.  We have a really nice range we opened August 12, 2006.  I don't know if it is because of the recent movies or what but the last few months we have many more people showing up and shooting on a regular basis.  We have annual $25 dues that are billed to members each August.  As an example I got and email yesterday (paraphrasing here) that said her ex husband joind the range and she got invoiced $25 (at this point I was thinking she wanted her $25 back) then she went on to say that her daughter wants to shoot and she wanted to know the combination to the gate as she didn't want to call her ex husband.  Last Sunday afternoon I went down the street to the range and there was a women there in here early thirties with three young boys and a young girl (the girl was too little to shoot).  The mom and the 3 boys were shooting their hearts out.  We now have a handful of older ladies showing up and shooting all the time.  For six years the range has had limited use, just your normal regulars.  This year it has been nuts.  It's to the point we need to expand our range as it was designed to allow 8-10 people to shoot comfortably/safely.  Most of the time you had it to yourself.  Now days it is much more common to have 15+ people there and have to wait to shoot.

I shoot in my suburban back yard quite a bit, and my two young daughters also shoot from time to time.  The neighbors on one side of us have a slew of grandkids and their friends over all the time, and they like to hang over the fence and watch us shoot.

One day we invited them over to give it a try.  Before long all their parents had come over, and the total guests numbered about 20.

It awakened a sleeping giant.  Their parents say they all want bows for Christmas and birthdays.  2 have already gotten them.  They seem to like shooting more than my own daughters do!
