Leafy Camo Suits - your experiences?
« on: August 21, 2012, 04:04:00 PM »
Hey guys, last year I bought a complete suit for really cheap on fleabay. It was used, though slightly, but is a nice well made set, including headnet and gloves. This one is the mesh underneath, so it has some skeeter repel value, which is a plus down here,   :help:

What's been your personal experiences with these? Would really like to hear from those who use/used them, especially from a treestand. Early season? Late season? Pros? Cons?

I'm somewhat concerned about the small noises that could occur with close up trad treestand hunting. Should I be worried about this?

Thx!

I wear them most of the times I sit a treestand - zero problems - mine is not noisy - maybe wash yours a few times. I hunt close encounter situations sometimes very difficult - I think leafys help a lot.

I've had very good luck using them.
They can be a bit loud when you draw or move around.
They can also snag a bit on tree bark if you're leaning/sitting against a tree..especially red pine trees.

I use mine throughout the archery season here as well as turkey season. Taken a couple of deer while wearing it. No problems.

Good stuff. All the camo you need. I have a headnet and gloves also but have never worn them. I wear mine over shorts in the early season and over winter coats in the winter. Mine is quiet when I draw.

I've had nothing but good experiences with my ASAT leafy suit.  I've had multiple deer walk within 5 yards of me and not have a clue I was there; I only hunt from the ground (spot-and-stalk or natural ground blinds).  I've not had any issues with it making a lot of noise, it is much quieter than I expected.  I don't have any issues with my string catching my bow arm either, but that's something to think about just in case.

I picked up a cheapy redhead leafy suit from Basspro a couple 3 years ago. Has been my most used set of camo since. Like TJ said, shorts and a Tshirt underneath when its hot and warmer stuff under when it cools off a little. I trimmed the bow arm on mine but an armguard does the same thing. Never had a problem with noise and I've had deer within 4-5 feet not see me on the ground.

I use one during the early season and turkey season. I have had nothing but good experiences with it. I think it definately helps convince animals that the big blob up in the stand is not human.

Dick's has a jacket/ pant combo for $70.00 I'm thinking of trying. It is the mesh type and want to wear t-shirt/ shorts under like TJ was talking about!

I love mine. Sometimes I get sick at work then feel a little better on the way home. No sense in wasting the day. They work great over work clothes.  ;)

I like mine, especially in the early season, when it's hot. Mine has netting like yours so I can wear a t-shirt and shorts underneath when its hot out.

I like mine, except for the snagging on and pulling in briars or other small type brush that growes along the trails.

I use mine year round.  Works great for me, but I did have to trim a little off of the left sleeve so it doesn't hit the string.

I use one most of the year. Does hang up a little but not as bad as a guille. I have had good luck with it.

I used one from Academy on my first "Trad" kill.  I had a big 'Ol Boar Hog walk within five feet of me...head on while wearing one.  I couldn't or didn't want to shoot head on...at the last minute to my relief he decided that there was something wrong with the bush holding the bow and arrow in front of him....he slowly started off and at about eight yards turned and offered me a broadside shot...resulting in my first "trad" big game kill.  For my photos...I took this leafy stuff off...

These leafy suits are effective for sure!!!! My first whitetail "Trad" kill photo has me in camo.

However...here in Texas....I prefer not to be out in public in camo much.....because there are so many (I know that this sounds elitist) macho jerks etc...wearing such garb and acting like macho idiots IMO ....and I don't really want to be associated with them....

Sooooo....yes...this type of camo works.
Have a nice day!
Kevin

only downfall I've personally experienced with leafy camo is when you hunt areas with grass burrs and plants with prickly seeds. Can also require the use of an arm guard. Great when it's hot though, have hunted in them wearing nothing but my skivvies under them to keep cool!

My wife uses a poncho. She keeps it rolled up until she is ready to sit.  All wild creatures seem to not see her and get very close. I just use it to scare the neighbors.
