Arrow purchase advise?
« on: September 03, 2012, 08:32:00 AM »
Hey gang,
I'm pretty new to the sport and the forum, so I apologize in advance for the elementary question.

I have a local archery store that had set me up with some arrows--Easton Legacy 2018 (55-60#).  They are closedtoday, and I had wanted to buy some more.  There is a local farm and fleet store that sells archery equipment, but I looked on their internet site and they don't have the Legacy.

I guess I'm not sure how to select something similar.  On the package, it will say if the spine is 300 or 400.  How does that translate to what I am shooting?

Any other things I ought to consider?  Not sure if I want to bump up to carbon shafts right now, but in the future, what can you tell me about Carbon Express 150's?

Whether your arrow be carbon, aluminum, or wood, they will all shoot well if tuned correctly.

In fact most will shoot better than you can shoot and so the differences are unnoticeable.

As for the material that you use each has it's pros and cons.

Wood is classic, beautiful, very traditional, and is known for being quiet. However, they are not always known for being as durable as carbon and aluminum, and they require re-straightening.

Carbon is tough as nails, is straight, and known for consistency in lots. Cons: It is the most expensive, can be tough to tune.

Aluminum is tough as well, does not require straightening, and is cheaper than carbon. Cons: Aluminum is not always as pretty as wood, as tough as carbon.

It is a matter of opinion which you choose. If you already have some aluminum then I would stick with them.

3RiversArchery.com carries the Easton Legacy arrows that you already have and they are great to deal with. (Though sometimes a tad bit more expensive so shop around a bit. I use 3 Rivers a lot because they have treated me so well. It is worth the extra $$.)

I am sure some of the guys will pop in and list some other pros or cons, or explain how my cons are inaccurate. ;-P

Almost scared to list and cons about someone's favorite arrow material choice.

Thanks for the input, I was hoping to pick something up this morning if I could find a comparable arrow.

I'm just target shooting for now, so I'm not in the market for premium arrows.  (it sucks losing expensive arrows!)

I'll keep 3riversArchery in mind for future!

I don't know what farm and fleet is but if they sell archery equipment they should be able to set you up with the equivalent arrow to what you are shooting in a different brand.  Alternatively you can go to any arrow manufactures web site and find an arrow fitting chart for poundage of bow and length of arrow.  I shoot gold tip carbons and like them quite a bit, I haven't been able to trust myself with wood yet, I'm still new too!
That's why they call it hunting....

No Name 50# at 28" (maybe Ben Pearson)
'69 Bear Grizzly 40# at 28"
Great Plains Wolf Creek  50# at 28" one piece
Fruit of the Loom Size Large

To answer your question more specifically, a 400 spine arrow is going to be 55-60# @ the average draw length of 28".

Check out this chart:

Will help a lot I hope.

The store is actually called Mills Fleet Farm.

I know they carry more arrows than their web page says.  Unfortunately, its a super store and their staff isn't very good at giving out recommendations.

Hello Barry. I'm not sure of the question you are asking. If you know the ones you purchased are 2117 and you like them you could go in that direction. Easton makes the camo hunter and the gamegetter in 2117,as well as other ones. 3Rivers website and their catalog is even better and easier to follow about giving the gpi and the over all length. The aluminum show to be 500/2016,400/2117,340/2315,300/2317.

I suggest you do a little reading and get a lil grasp of what all that stuff means.  Spine is spine, however it is talked about in several ways, from the "old days" to the "now days".

Formerly, it was way easier.  You had limited choices.  You went to a store and read the chart that said " for this arow length, this sort of bow, this is the arrow you need.

Now you have a lot of choices and a lot more knowledge of what is needed.  We do, however,  tend to make things more difficult than they really need to be.

Read and get an understanding of how the words overlap and you can play all the games out there.

Wood, aluminum, carbon. . .  they are all great, and they all have their issues.
