Border Hex 6's Vs BF Extremes :)

A while back I attended the Whitingham shoot in N.J. It was the first 3 D shoot that I had ever attended. While I was there I meet a fellow named Ray Iglesias( Julio's cousin)  

I bumped into him on a course and knew right away he was a good shooter and a hell of a nice guy. He was shooting  a Morrison wood riser with a set of Hex 5's. I believe and I was either shooting a Fedora or a Silvertip.

We hit it off right away and have made it a point to shoot together at the various shoots this past year.  Well unbenounced to either of us we where both working on setting up are own vision of the perfect ILF hunting rig.

This is where it gets strange,  I had narrowed my selection to an all Pheniloic riser from Bob Morrison and for limbs I was not decided. It was between the BFs and the Top end Borders.

I also battled on configuration, I was torn between going with a 15 inch riser and a set of long limbs or a 17 inch riser with a set of medium limbs in either configurations making a 60 inch bow.

I went with the 17 inch Riser and a set of BF's mainly because of my closeness to John Wert and the great reviews of them.  Plus I could drive to meet John and play with different sets till I got exactly what I wanted.  I know have 2 sets of BF's. I would like to  have a set of Borders also someday.

So you can imagine my suprise when I showed up at the first shoot and my buddy Ray had a 15 inch all Phenolic Morrison Riser with a set of Border Hex 6's with the BB2 tech.

Rays been shooting it lights out this year winning the Long Island trad shoot this year with a 260 something and placing in the top 5 at the Muzzy shoot where Fred Eichler placed 3

Ray comes from the Garden State where you can shoot like 300 deer a year    so he gets a lot of practice

So you can imagine how curious I was about Rays bow and how pleased I was when he showed up today to have some fun


so let's start

First off these bows are configured different

Rays

15 inch Morrison  Phenolic riser

Long limbs

7 1/4 inch brace  height

60 inch bow

17 inch Morrison Phenolic Riser

Medium limbs

7 1/2 inch brace height

60 inch bow

 

Both bows pull with in a pound of each other 52/53 #'s @ 28

They both shoot one of my 530 grain hunting arrows ( 400 spine cut to 29 inches , 100 grain insert , 125 grain point )

They bare shaft the same arrow perfectly.

Ray did the pulling and I ran the chrono and told him when he was at the same draw each shot

As for shootability

We started on my deck practicing tree stand shots

 

 

I have a few 3 D targets set out and you can walk around the deck and shoot thru limbs at different distances kinda playing PIG like in basketball

 

Then we took the Rhinehart Ball and went roving

We walked my woods just throwing the ball and where ever it ends up you shoot it

I don't know if you can make out the ball but it's out there

 

 

The way I look at it is if you can keep your arrows in the ball your killing deer

 


We ended up back on my 3 D's just shooting one arrow from different angles and distances. In my opinion these different  styles of practiceing are the best for a hunter

All shots are unknown distances the ground is different levels and the deck shooting is perfect for tree stand hunting

When it comes to comparing bows

We switched back and forth and both bows are fantastic and can both be picked up by either of us and shot well.

You feel the weight of the borders at first rather quickly and then they have a noticeable let off at full draw that would take me a bit to get used to.

The Extremes are just smooth all the way back till they kinda just start resisting

Speed is negligible in my mind

All phenolic risered bows are famous for there lack of hand shock but I still felt a little buzz from the Border equipped bow,  compared to my bow with the BF's but to be fair my riser has 2 inches more Phenolic riser and limb savers and is the deadest bow in the hand I have ever felt.

In the end I prefered mine and Ray preferred his ( so he said     )

Ray usually out shoots me and today we where about equal so I was pleased

So in my mind there is no winner just 2 very bad ass hunting rigs and I would be happy with either one

This wasn't a review but just a lucky guy and his buddy showing off their ridiculously sweet rigs... I am thoroughly jealous and have no comments... well none except great write up and nice pics too... did I mention the jealousy thing?

Nice review, I would be interested to see where the Morrison MAX 1's would compare to the BF's and the Borders. Gotta love the ILF's endless configurations.

I have been considering ILF and was thinking of going 17" Titan riser and BF limbs but I might have to take a closer look at what Mr Morrison has on offer.

I had the pleasure of shooting Ray's bow at the Baltimore shoot this year. It does smoke an arrow!

I also just acquired a Morrison phenolic 15" riser, sporting a set of Bob's new Max 1 limbs. They look very "Border" like.

Unfortunately, I am on the mend from a sprained shoulder, so it will be a wile before I can put mine through the paces.

The Titan is also a great riser and is my choice in aluminum

Those are both super nice looking rigs.  I just (a month ago) received my Morrison Phenolic 17" ILF riser and Border Hex V-H (Med) limbs and I love them.  I actually put limbsavers at the fade outs and changed the string to a higher strand count D-97 and it shoots lights out now.  It is super quite.  Interesting to see what BH other folks are using on their Morrison/Border rigs.  I had to really play with mine to get it happy but all is well now.  Mine is not as quite as my Bob Lee Signature (it is close) but it is MUCH faster and smoother pulling 5-6 pounds less weight.  That is a win, win in my book!  I still need to practice though.  I certainly don't shoot near as well as you guys.  Wonderful post and beautiful bows!

The first thing I noticed was the difference in the amount of recurve between the two limbs.  The Borders really have a deep recurve.  

Great looking bows and a great write up.  They have me thinking of the term "Black Death"...
