Insert removel in carbon arrows

Can factory installed inserts be removed from carbon arrows.

I've done it by dropping a drill bit down the nock end and swinging it. The bit will knock the inserts loose.

careful heat works too, screw a practice tip in the insert and heat that as it heats so will the insert and it will loosen up

I prefer the drill bit method because it requires no heat,i just don't like to heat carbons.But sometimes nothing will get them out short of just cutting them out,but that will shorten up your arrow shaft.Alot depends on what they used to glue them in.

Warm it up 1st by threading a point into it. BUT leave a gap between the point and insert (1/8" is plenty) so as not to transfer heat to the end of the shaft in a small concentrated place. You want to GENTLY heat the whole insert but not HOT! I have a steel rod I use to gently tap the insert loose. If any carbon fiber comes with it the shaft is trash or needs to be cut off.

I just removed some by removing the nock and using a rifle cleaning rod to gently tap them out. Mine did not have any glue.

BTW if you use JB weld and the shaft has been properly prepared for gluing ,NOTHING and I mean NOTHING will make them come loose.

I use boiling water only for heat, and a old chainsaw file for a little more weight than a drill bit.

I heat threads before I screw them into the insert.  I gently pull and wait for the heat to reach the glue.  This keeps the amount of heat that reaches the carbon shaft to an absolute minimim.

Just be careful if you use the drill bit method to swing the arrow in a safe direction.  I almost took my basement window out!  Eric.

If cool flex is used to install them, you can run hot water over the end of the arrow and grab the point with a pair of pliers and pull the insert out.  Otherwise, I have used the .22 cal ramrod, as others have mentioned.

Tried heat in the past, heating a 200gr field point not fully seated in the insert. It worked but I wound up ruining close to half of the Gold Tips I tried it on. There's a fine line between just enough heat and too much. Went to the drill bit method and haven't had a problem since, with a little work I've had a 100% success rate popping inserts out. I use Easton HIT adhesive.
