Adding Rope/Weed Eater line to Arrow for Increased weight???
« on: September 27, 2012, 09:39:00 AM »
My arrows only weigh around 419 gr (not actually weighed just did the math) without counting the wrap or feathers. I would like to add some weight to my arrows real quick as hunting season is less than 2 weeks away. I was wondering about just cutting a lenght of rope and adding it to each arrow from the nock end. Anybody ever heard or thought of this? I just thought of it as I have a huge spool of small engine replacement pull starting rope.

I used to put some 1/4" rope in 2117 aluminums.  It works well for added weight.  I like to add point weight a little better, but never had problems with rope. You just have to fill the arrow with the rope, no extra space.

Seems to me it would be much easier and more consistent to add a 100 gr. brass insert.  I would think that any rope inside a shaft can't be good for accuracy - it's going to move when you shoot.  Then again, I've never tried it so maybe I'm all wet.  I do use various brass inserts, broadhead adapters, etc. to adjust for the final weight and/or spine I need.

Rope is going to shift too much...

Weed eater line....doubled over for more weight....or aquarium tubing....they also make mini aquarium tubing if yoiu have skinny arrows.

Cut both longer than need be so the material scrunches for no rattle...bout a half inch longer should do it for the tubing, and maybe a little less for the weed line.

Terry what do you mean by "double over" weed eater line?

Fold it over for twice the weight added if you want more that what one strand will add.

I've actually done some arrows with weed line inside aquatium tubing.

Gotcha    Thanks Terry. Would you leave the line a little longer than the arrow and then glue the nock in place? Thanks again

I tried the rope once. It ended up bunching up at the front end of the arrow (it compacted after many shots).

I'd go the weed whacker or tubing route since it's stiffer.

I use the orange poly bailing twine doubled over and have had good results with it. Doesn't affect arrow flight either just gives me the additional weight I want.

I have tried the weed whacker line but it didn't work well for me. It kept causing my nocks to pop out of the shaft when the arrow hit the target. Also caused bad arrow flight for me.

I have used weedeater line in a single strand and lay it in a full length of electrical tape and double the tape over the line. The tape will keep the line from rattling inside the shaft.

I will try out the weed eater line this eve after work. I don't have a scale yet I have to go to my Dad's to use our reloading scale. How much would you guys say roughly the weed whacker line weighs? Thanks for the responses.

Roundbal, I think 28" of .095 is around 50gr. if I remember correctly.

I cut mine double the length I need and fold over. I then kink it about every 4in. or so.

I got some really funky arrow flight with rope, though some guys use it. I like the brass inserts to add the weight to the front, but that means a restart on tuning, which may or may not be the case with the weed whacker stuff.

I'm going to weigh in here as I happen to be playing with arrows this week. I vote no for rope because its weigh may change with the humidity and if it gets wet it will soak up the water and weigh a lot more for quite some time. I recently added weed eater line to a few arrows to make up for the weight I lost when I dropped insert weight to stiffen the shaft. It gains weight and it stiffens the shaft a bit. Be prepared for this when you add something to the middle of the arrow. I'm likely going to add smaller line to fill in the voids of bigger line. I need increased stiffness and weight. You can also wrap the line with Teflon tape to keep it from shifting/making noise.
Something no one has mentioned but is a possibility to be prepared for: If you hit something hard with the arrow and you've got weight tubes inside, sometimes the nock gets blown out of the arrow into oblivion. Have extra nocks handy JIC.
Best of Luck!

We used to back in the day use weed wacker cord and rope. Now that we have 100 gr, brass inserts and heavy weighted broadheads we don't need to use it anymore. I remember nocks kept falling out and the cord would be sticking out. It was a pain.

I also use Plastic bale twine, their is three sizes out their. One for small bales and one size for round bales, and one for the large square bales, it is the one i use in my carbons. It fits tight, no rattle and does not change spine, only adds weight. if you want to try some let me know.

I haven't had any nocks popping out issues even on hard hits. I cut the length of both lines to fit up inside of the nock. Its a tight fit on CE heritages but works pretty well. If you pull the nock out it actually stays attached to the line.
