paper tune perplexed
« on: October 05, 2012, 07:00:00 PM »
I've never paper tuned but decided to make a frame for the paper and try it.  The first bow showed a bit of a weak spine so I put a lighter point on and perfect hole!  The next bow was getting good holes also with what I had been shooting.  Then my 1-piece toelke recurve 55# @ 29" seems to shoot ok with a 67# spine cedar but on the paper it shows that the nock point is low.  I've moved it from 1/2" up to over an inch and the tear is about the same.  I shoot 3-under  The Belcher recurve seems to shoot 74# with 145gr point well but it shows that the arrow is too stiff no matter what arrow.  I've tried 65# cedar and a 2020 aluminum with points from 125-175 same too stiff tear everytime. Does anyone have any ideas?

Why don't you try throwing away the paper, and shoot what flys best??? (seriously!)

Just like "bare shaft" testing..... Arrows have feathers on them for a reason!!!
I only shoot WOOD arrows... My kid makes them, fast as I can break them!

I hear you bro! I used the spine calc for some CE Heritages and can't get bullet holes with them despite tuning the arrow or bow. Always nock high at 5 yards and nock low at 10 yards. The calc worked spot on for my Gold Tips and they required no special tuning, bullet holes.  So, I gave up the paper and just went with where they were hitting. The CEs were going where I was looking with field points and I felt really good about the Heritages  but once I put a broadhead on it, that changed . So no more CE for me. Gold Tips fly the same,  field point or broadhead. Sticking with those.

So, skip the paper and shoot with field tips first then broadheads and if they hit the same, where you look, then there you go.

My hybrid long bow is around 45lb at my draw. It loves .500 spine aluminums at 30.5".

I started with the nock at 1" high and ended up around 5/16" above square.

Every one kept telling me to go with 1916's.

Funny thing, with 6 feather flu flu the 2117 is absolutely perfect.

Ya just gotta try and see.

Go to bowmaker.net and follow the tuning information-to a letter.

I paper tune every bow I own. I have tried to help several other guys with paper tuning and have run into the issue you are having with a couple of them. The only common thing I can find is that it is only with 3 under shooters. I can not figure out what causes it and posted a thread on the Shooters Form Forum a few months ago asking the same thing you are asking now. I did not get any definitve answers and am still perplexed why this happens to some shooters (and in my experience, only 3 under shooters).

Fairly simple, follow the links to paper tune,
 http://elitearrows.com/proper-arrow/
or bare shaft.
 http://www.acsbows.com/bareshaftplaning.html
Both work, it is a matter of preference and following the instructions.

It is not all in the poundage of the bow. It is also in how the riser is cut, to center, past center etc. Inconsistant release has impact on arrow flight too.

Bowgy on your tolke recurve what material are you using on the arrow self, if leather try a softer material like velcro you my have the arrow point bouncing off/up self at release. Also what point weight and length of shaft

If you can not get the arrow to paper tone then you are NOT!!!!!!!!!!!!getting GOOD!!!!!!!!!!!!arrow flight.  It may be that that the tiller is not correct for three fingers under.  Check to see if the upper limb is 5/16 to 3/8 positive.  When paper tuning all aspects come into play.  I find that spine of the raw shaft is more important than tip weight.  That is if the shaft is too stiff added tip weight does not always help.

No offense to anyone out there, if it will not punch a good hole in paper it is NOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! flying well.  Paper just let you see actuallly what the arrow is doing.

It also depends on how center shot your bow is.  Try shooting at the paper at at least 10 yards.

Only suggestion would be to make sure and use 2 nock points on your string.  Shooting 3 under...it really makes a difference to have that second nock-set below your arrow nock.

The Toelke has a velcro shelf and the arrow that seemed to fly best, not on the paper, is 67# tapered cedar 29.5" 125gr @29" draw.  I'll try shooting the paper at 10 yards, I've been shooting 6'.

At shorter distances if the bow is not truely center shot it takes the arrow longer to recover.

You can also check shoot a fletched shaft thru the paper as it should also punch a good hole.  If it is fletched and still not punching a good hole then for sure it is not flying right.
