Missed a coyote....with the wife watching.
« on: October 10, 2012, 10:03:00 AM »
My wife likes to go to the foodplots and watch deer with me, so I got a big game two person ladderstand and got it put up last Saturday.

Yesterday evening she was with me in the stand.  No deer came out, but I looked up and a young coyote was coming into the plot.  He kept looking behind him and another came out.  They were obviously litter mates.

I got up, nocked an arrow, and started lip squeaking.  I predator hunt a lot after deer season, so I figured it would work.  It did.  The second one couldn't take it after about a minute and started running in.  He got to about 35 yards and started circling downwind, but the wind was straight in my face so he cut back across from my left to right.  I started drawing and squeaked him to a stop at 26 yards broadside.  The shot was perfect left to right, but just low.

I need to practice more from elevation.  I took the same shot with a judo and hit low again, so apparantly my subconcious thinks it looks closer than it really is?  I was nailing 30 yarders on the way to the stand, but shooting from the stand caused me to shoot low.

My wife told me it was the first coyote she had seen outside of a zoo, so that was pretty cool.  I grew up in a very rural area and she grew up in the city so everything is new to her.

It was a great night, but man! How long will it be before I get another chance at a coyote with the recurve?
It ain't the bow, it's the Indian behind it.

He sure was after that arrow went two inches under his chest!  His buddy didn't know what happened though.

Never had one stick around after shooting or should I say shooting at another one. If one leaves in a hurry they all do and most times in different directions.
