Question about shelf cut
«
on:
October 13, 2012, 08:11:00 AM »
Is there any advantage to a bow that has a shelf cut to center other than being easier to tune an arrow to? Are the shooting characteristics any different in a bow that is cut proud of center if the arrows are tuned properly? I haven't shot a lot of different bows yet and was just curious.
Thanks, Eric.

A shelf that is cut to center or past enables stiffer arrows to be used which may reduce paradox and perhaps improve penetration. Tuning is tuning.................I have not decided if shelf cut makes tuning easier or if you can shoot a variety of spines with the same bow. Once the feathers are on a lot of sins get covered up anyway.

I have heard that a bow cut to center allows the easier tuning of a wider variety of arrow spines. One that is not cut to center will shoot just fine, but it is more critical to find the correct spine to achieve good arrow flight.
Go to the Bowyers Bench forum on TradGang and ask this question. You will get tons of advice from the bow builders.
