Rod Jenkiins plus practice
« on: October 16, 2012, 04:03:00 PM »
I am 64 years old and have been shooting a bow since about 1957 or 1958, I am too old to remember for sure when I got my first bow. Anyhow, I was never a great shot, I considered myself about average. Early this year I attended one of Rod Jenkins shooting clinics. At the end of the first day I thought I had wasted my money. I did not really understand the back tension thing and I felt very awkward trying. But, I did not give up. I practiced the blank bale for over 3 weeks and worked hard to change my shooting style. I began to see improvement in my 3D scores this summer. I have continued to "buy in" to his teachings and it is now paying off. I am not showing the below picture to show how good I am. I am showing the picture for the guys who want to improve their shooting skills. If I can make the change at my old age, then his clinic should help almost anyone. It has not been easy, changing an old habit, but usually nothing worthwhile is easy. If you want to shoot better, you might consider attending one of Rod's clinics.
These arrows were shot at 26 yards.

You're shooting like that and dare to put a half dozen arrows into the same spot?

I can do that with little danger, but I'll bet you're replacing some arrows   :)

Hey John! What is your shooting style? Split or three under? Gap, split vision, instinctive?  Great shooting by the way!

I shot instinctive for years, both split and 3 under using as glove. Rod did not get into aiming style in his clinic. But since I was changing my style, anchor point, back tension etc, I decided to change to 3 under using a tab and also to gap/point of aim. I figured if I was going to change I might as well change everything at the same time. Now I shoot 3 under and use the point of my arrow to aim. But again, Rod does not preach the aiming style. He teaches the shooting "process" including the back tension. The best part is I no longer think "release". I just keep pullng until the arrow is gone. Not having to actually "release" the arrow has stopped my pushing the bow at release and stopped the occassional "jerk" on release. This was the most difficult thing to accept, not having a release, just keep pulling until arrow is gone. It was very strange for me. Back tension works with instictive too, I just wanted to try point of aim for my 3D. One more thing, My eye sight is getting very bad. If I can get the cataracks fixed I hope that will help my shooting. The most important thing is not how you aim, wether you use a tab or glove, etc. It is the "process" and the back tension that made the big difference. It helped me be more consistant.

Good for you!

I do not know Rod but from seeing your targets and your saying how hard you worked to "change your shooting style", I assumed it had to be going to a more static measured style. There are no instinctive shooters on the Olympic teams.

This is not to put instinctive shooters down, I lean that way myself. But have done both. But I do wonder how consistent at 26yrds MOST instinctive shooters are. I am not that consistent, at least with that many arrows. I find myself slipping back into reference aiming with a more vertical bow to gain such consistency. And I've found that back tension -that last inch of draw -makes a huge difference.

More practice required to gain such consistency when shooting instinctively?

I'm impressed, but knowing Rod and having been to one of his clinics, I am not surprised. Gap shooting involves using the tip of the arrow as a sight, which for most people is more accurate.

I can attest to Rod's class helping. Took it in August. While I'm not a great shot, I do know that he helped me a lot. Now, every time I make a bad shot, I know what I did wrong.

Having hosted Rod's clinic twice now I can attest that IF you "buy in" and do the work afterwards,it will improve your shooting. The work afterwards isn't really fun. Matter of a fact its a pain in the butt! But it does work! I'm 3 for 3 on deer this season and thats proof enough for me!

Nice work rebuilding your form John....the results speak for themselves at 26 yards.

Like TxAg above, I attended Rod's clinic here in Texas in August. I had bought in before I ever went due to testimonials here, and from Moebow, Bisch, and a lot of others who have all seen exceptional results from following Rod's program.  I was fortunate to have coaching from Arne for the last year or so and his methods prepared me to get the most out of Rod's clinic.

However, like you I'm having to change too many years of doing it the wrong way, but Rod is tops in teaching you the basics, and then setting you up to get the most out of it by teaching yourself with the bale and drills.

Personally it's the best time/money I ever spent in archery.

I too took Rod's clinic in May. The best money I ever spent in archery. I never knew how much bad habits were develop by learning on your own. Learning the back tension and keeping the string forearm relax was the hardest. After several months my form has improved greatly. I still hit the blank bale to allow me to keep my form sharp.

Scoutt,
I know what you are talking about, I was 63, no prior leassons, when I took his clinic in Oregon last June.  I think the biggest thing I got from him was how to practice and not just "Sling Arrows."

I agree, I was also an arrow slinger. I figured the more I shot the better I would get.....not true. One very nice thing now is that when I miss a shot now, I know why I missed it. No more guessing.
