Broadheads don't feel sharp
« on: October 17, 2012, 11:33:00 PM »
So now that i'm into trad archery im sharping my heads myself and they don't "feel" sharp.  They are however shaving the hair off my arms and legs, but again they just dont have the feel of razor sharp.  I this typical or am i doing something wrong.  I bought a set of wheels that attach to your grinder for sharpening knifes, dont know if this is the problem or its me.

I have noticed that 3 blades may not feel as sharp as two blades or four blades with a removable bleeder blade but they still shave hair with ease. The less angle you put on a bevel will make an edge feel sharper although it won't be as rigid as a higher angle bevel. Most two blades run around a 40-50 degree bevel with single bevels being around 25 degrees. 3 blades run around a 60 degree bevel. My thing is does any of this make that much of a difference probably not. If your heads are shaving hair then I gurantee they are sharp enough to hunt with.

Khall1 it may indeed be just you. If they shave hair they are good to go. Try this: sharpen up your fav knife............get it shaving hair sharp and compare that to your BH with your hands-in my experience they should feel the same.  The sharpening wheels on a grinder work great! IMO anyway.

I think it has to do with the angle of your edge. Sometimes if I'm using a strop I get a convexed edge that feels dull. However if it shaves hair or sticks in your nail and will cleanly cut paper you are good. By the by seeing if a knife will stick in your nail is as good an indicater of sharpness and you don't end up with ridiculous bald patches everywhere.

Watch an old butcher   after using a steel on his knife  drag it EVER SO LIGHTLY across his thumb nail.   If it starts biting in  without pressure it is SHARP>     IF it shaves hair off your arm it will do that to your thumb nail.

a cutting edge is directional . it may shave hair in one direction and not even feel sharp the other .
