Need some arrow tuning help
« on: October 18, 2012, 10:51:00 PM »
Ok I am shooting a Hoyt Dorado, 50# @ 28". I picked up some 3555 Gold Tips full length tipped with 125 gr points. I was trying to do a little bare shaft tuning tonight. I was shooting these about 11-12 yards away from a bag target. When pulling the arrows they were grouped fairly tight ( baseball to softball size groups) and this was even in gusty side wind. Also had good shaft alignment. Now Im not sure if the bag straightens the arrow after they hit or what. I was using a firm side of the target where there were few soft spots. This seem right? These a good combination for this bow? Another question I have is what shaft should I shoot if I want to shoot my 150 woodsman broad heads? Will those make a 3555 shaft too weak? I will also be picking up a pair of 48# limbs soon and want to shoot the 150gr. woodsman broad heads. Just not sure if 25 more grains will weaken these 3555 too much. Any input would be appreciated.

Just to add to this .. ********* told me my shafts were too weak for a 150 gr point. But who knows... i think every bow and shooter varies.

Your so right in your assumptions,For every given shooter, bow and arrows theres a million variations, the only way to really find out ,is to pick up the bow, start shooting and experimenting.Theres a sweet spot to many combinations, you and only you can find out.Best of luck.Nothing better than experimenting. You will really get to know your equipment and what makes it work.
Quote from Howard Hill.( Whenever he taught someone to shoot) "Son make up your mind right now if you want to target shoot or hunt as theres a world of differance between the two"

Bag the bag.  You will have much better luck with a foam target the will give you the angle of entry.  If you arrow is too weak depends on the poundage, arrow point, how clean you release the arrow, bow torque. As Seve said there are a boatload of different issues that make up arrow flight.  Dr Ashby notes that the variables are static in that as one changes the other might be affected in a totally different way.

This all said, it ain't rocket science.  Shoot the bare shaft into a foam target and make the necessary adjusments to your set up.  Start with the nock first and then go to the spine.

If the 125gr points went perfectly straight into the target then 150gr points should show slightly weak. When you factor in the fletching the arrows should stiffen up slightly. If the shafts are still too weak cutting a quarter of an inch may be all that is needed. The most important factor in bare shafting is not at what angle the shafts enter but if they go where you are looking.
