Safety reminder: check your shafts
« on: October 19, 2012, 07:47:00 AM »
Checking in with a safety reminder guys.

I'm not fortunate enough to have a big piece of property that allows me to shoot outside so I shoot in my basement a lot.  I can only get 12 yards down there, so I have my fair share of broken nocks and shaft slapping.  It happens so frequently that I guess I've gotten kinda casual about it.

This morning when I went to draw my first arrow, I heard a faint "click" as I drew the bow.  I thought maybe I didn't seat the string properly or something so I let down to inspect.  What I found was a pretty good crack formed in my arrow about 3/4 of the way down.  I don't know what may have happened if I let that thing fly, but it could have been ugly.  For safety sake, check your shafts if you get any contact at the target.

Shoot straight.  Shoot safe guys,

I'm glad I have inspected my shafts before shooting them. I have found shafts with cracks that I had planned on shooting. always chek em.

Just don't shoot "groups" in your basement... Use your imagination to keep things safe and interesting.

Great points guys.  Off-hunting season, I shoot dots on a bag target, but this time of year, I tend to shoot a 3D deer so I'm used to drawing on an "animal" and forced to pick a spot.  Maybe it's time to think about doing that one arrow at a time.
