small game point
« on: October 30, 2012, 08:47:00 PM »
I recently received and watched the awesome tradgang DVD and was wondering about something.  At one part one of the guys uses a very cheap set up for rabbits....a field point with a washer behind it.  I was wondering if anyone had tried this for other small game and how do the arrows fly.  I wouldn't think they'd fly well but he was getting the rabbits with them.  Sorry I watched the while thing ask the way through at once so I forgot who it was on the DVD.    Loved the DVD by the way!

Yes washers are cheap thumpers

I usually use 125 gr field points on my cedars.  I modify that by changing to 100 grains and glue a 9 mm casing.
They shoot right on altho a little heavier
I busted a cottontail on Sunday that went no place when smacked at 20 yards

Ive always heard 9mm, .38, .357 (all the same family) casings work great but...

I thumped a desert cottontail the other day, less than 10 yards. He did a backflip, then hopped away. The brush was far to heavy for me to pursue...

I'm gonna switch from casings to something a lil pokier...

Try a field point with a wingnut or 100 gr 'speed point' with a bolt behind it.

I use a variety of small game points.  The Ace Hex and Gamenabber (second and third in from left) are tied for my favorites.

Popped a red squirrel with a plain 'ol blunt Sunday.  Still a good choice.

I use .38 casings almost exclusively on my cedar shafts; works for me.

A wing nut/ field point combo sounds interesting, I's like something that will keep the arrow from burying itself.  I currently have a couple judo points, but I like the idea of cheaper and home made.

I Have been using either Judos or  357 casings  for 40 years now.    I punch out the primers and put a small carpet tack w/ point out in mine then put in some  7.5 shot  to weigh it to match the points i'm shooting at that time. ( right now that's  145 grains )   then glue them on. File the points down a bit so they don't stick out TOO far  and I'M set.  I also use them without the tack.

Article in the latest TBM by Rob Davis shows how to make a field point into something very similar to the gamenabber.  I also found the .38 casing with a banding steel blade soldered into it works well also (same article).

Here is one I came up with while looking at a 5 gallon bucket full of empty keys.

I like the key idea.

I don't like center punching animals and having them waltz away like its no big deal.

The washers behind a point fly fine for me and work fine but my favorite for stumping and small game are the VPA SGT's. Effective and durable like all their products.
