Another Successful Hunt - The Story
« on: November 04, 2012, 03:51:00 PM »
Well, there are actually 2 stories because there are pictures of 2 bucks on the "Hi-lites". First of all, I was shooting a 62"/53# Tall Tines Bow I recently purchased.  I really like this bow.  I've had some struggles w/trad equipment over the yr's & even shot a compound a couple of season's.  For whatever reason, I have nothing but confidence with this bow & I'm shooting better than ever. I shoot GT shafts & use Woodsman broadheads.  Like Snuffers, Woodsman's are easy to sharpen, fly well for me, penetrate great, & make a big hole.  Stay away from the shoulder blade & you will have good blood trails & positive results.  Anyway, the smaller of the 2 was taken 1st.  I'd passed up a spike a few minutes before he showed up.  With the freezer being empty & a decent sized deer coming my way I decided I'd shoot him if he gave me a chance, which he did.  Walking broadside at 8 yds, I leaned over, concentrated, drew and shot all at once.  Blood spurted immediately as he took off on a mad dash.  Just a few seconds later, I thought I heard a crash.  I sent a text to my wife asking her if she wanted to track a deer & she said yes.  I said be ready in 15 minutes & we'll go.  When I got home, she was eating a sandwich.  Side note:  Her uncle, an Alabama cattle farmer saw me sitting on his front porch & said, "Whutcha doin' boy".  I said, "waitin'", which he responded with, "waitin' on them women", to with I said, "yep".  His final comment was, "you gonna be waitin' on them women a long time".  No truer words have ever been spoken. I digress.  We took up the trail short time later & 150 yds later, a nice fat 2.5 8 pt'er was waiting for us.  Three days later found me in a treestand in a creek bottom.  I normally despise bottom stands because of fickle wind currents and being busted more times than I can remember.  However, this spot was too good to not try.  I have this friend who I'll call "Jim" check this spot out with me & he agreed it was a great spot.  He sits in creek bottoms a lot & has had good luck.  I got off work at noon and felt like sitting in a tree & got in the stand early, about 1:30 I think.  Along about 4:30 I see a young buck at a distance walking along a corn field.  A few minutes later, he's 12 yds away & has no clue I'm around.  This is good.  I pass on him and a short time later I hear a commotion & here comes 2 antlerless deer which turns out to be a big doe & her fawn.  Everything is fine & I'm going to shoot this big doe if given the chance.  Things didn't go so well.  The wind switched and the doe got a whiff of Kev a left never presenting a shot.  There was nothing to do but blame my "friend", "Jim" for this misfortune.  An hour or so later the wind had died down & I heard a noise to the west of me & walking right down the center of the creek is this big 8 pt'er.  Wow, he look's pretty good & he's coming closer with each step.  He's on the other side of the creek about 15 yds away but doesn't present a shot.  As I'm watching him, I decide I'll shoot if given the chance.  He cooperates & walks right underneath me, so I shot him at 6 yds or so.  He takes off & THEN I get the shakes.  He busts out the way he came in.  I look down & see a bloody arrow laying on the ground.  I sat there a few minutes, carefully climbed down, looked at my arrow, & headed home.  A couple of hours later, my son, friend, "Jim" & I take up the trail.  The blood trail is profuse.  My 16 yr old is in the lead.  "Here's blood, there's blood" was all we heard.  The buck then decided to go up a steep hill.  That's when I think, "Aw crap", (that's not what I thought, I can't print what I really thought).  No one's worried but me.  Bubbly  blood indicated a lung hit was present.  We'd gone a little over 200 yds, when my boy said, "There he is"!!!!! What a relief!  He was stiff & died on his feet in the few seconds it took him to travel the 200+ yds.   After handshakes, back slaps, & saying things like "oh boy, wow, and gosh", field dressing started.  Once that was completed, a great debate commenced as to how we were going to get this animal out of the woods.  We were on a bramble choked hillside quite a ways from any field edge or trail.  It was decided for me to get my truck which had my deer cart, & meet them in my neighbors pasture.  By the time I got back to my truck, visited with my neighbor, & drove down the pasture, "Jim" &  my son, Nate had the buck drug through the thicket & waiting for me at the fence.  What a great day!  I know how Tom Sawyer must have felt.  I hope you've enjoyed this story.  The end.
