I am now a believer in wool plaid!
« on: November 04, 2012, 07:51:00 PM »
Saturday morning while ground hunting I had 5 does come in 15 yards from where I was sitting.  I was tucked in the edge of some tall weeds.  Unfortunately I made a movement at the wrong time and one of them spotted me.  She began going through the normal routine, trying to figure out what I was.  After a few stomps and blowing once she started to run off.  Then she turned around and came back to do it all over again.  This happened 3 more times and after she had enough one of the others came over to check me out.  They all finally left but I don't think they ever did figure out what I was.  I was wearing an Asbell wool pullover that was Montana Magic plaid. After seeing this I swear this stuff works better than any camo that I have worn.

I've wondered how well it would work around here, I guess I'll have to try some myself.

I hear you bro. The buck I took was about 9 yards out from me when I was wearing Evening Stand Brown on the ground, backed into some brush with some old burlap for a backer. Torso totally exposed for clear shooting. He even looked in my direction a few times. I'm a believer for sure. Can't get anymore proof with blending than that. Asbell #1. Now she has that new timber ghost pattern. Very sweet!

Yep, check my post on the 5 minute deer hunt. Asbell wool is what I have worn for two years now, and it works as well or better than 'real' camo.

I agree 100% with you Chris on the deer not being sure of what you are when you're wearing the plaid wool and sitting still.

Since we're all braggin' on Asbell wool....I had a button buck 4 steps from me in my ground blind this morning. He was being chased by someone's loose coon hound and decided I was the safer bet! LOL! Once he caught my scent he didn't stay long, but I have a feeling that he still wasn't too sure of what he saw. This makes three small buck encounters of 15 steps or less this year when ground hunting in my ESB Asbell wool. Teresa makes top notch stuff and has some great pattens of wool plaid. Thanks for posting.

I'm becoming a huge fan of grey.  Very versatile color in my opinion.  Had a small flock of turkey within 20 yards of me on opening day and all I was wearing was a pair of camo pants and a grey henley shirt.  I was hunting from the ground.

Wool works, thats for sure. I try and use a pattern thats apprpriate for where I intend to be, I think it's the FABRIC more so than the pattern. The fibers of wool absorb light so well.

Last night I was out hunting, and it really struck me how "flat" everything got as the sun dipped behind the trees. It was that last 30 minutes of light. No shadows, everything was the same color tone. I was wearing 4 different wools...Cedar Swamp plaid vest, over a Evening Stand Green zip up, with grey wool pants, and a "Partridge Plaid" Stormy Kromer hat. Everything blended so well.

Conversely, as I was heading out yesterday afternoon, something caught my eye in a tree across the swamp.I put my binoculars on it, and waaaaaay over on the other farm, at LEAST 400 yards away, was a person sitting in a tree stand, in full camo. I don't know what fabric the hunter was wearing, but it reflected like a piece of foil. Think about that....full camo, it it caught my eye at 400 yards, and I wasn't LOOKING for anythng....

Roger, that's interesting. I'd guess that part of the reason is that the surface of wool fabric is not flat like most synthetic fabrics and that helps to break up the light reflexion. Also, it seems like the colors of wool are softer which could be the dye, or again, just the fact that the wool fibers are less parallel in the fabric.

For anyone considering trying wool for the first time there are other benefits. One of the major ones is that wool can keep you warm even when it is wet. That could be important in extreme situations. I am really enjoying my Asbell zip front hooded jacket, even in the southern state of NC.

I was just going to start a whole new topic but then I read this one and figured my comment would do just fine in here because its so much related.

we cannot hunt on sundays here in the republic of Massachusets so its a good time to scout or move stands or take the dogs for a run,,, well I wanted to check some stand areas for buck sign and to make a long story short I went into this spot and almost immediately a big doe turns and trots away, she was standing there at about 25yds right in front of me and because I was looking at tracks I never saw her so she doesn't really spook hard just kinda gets out of my way,,,, this is unusual because at this time they are getting hunted pretty good..  okay so now I'm looking more up out into the woods and after walking another 10yds I look up and standing there perfectly broadside is a huge doe looking about 140lbs! so I just said to myself okay its time to back the heck out of here!!!!

heres the thing,, I was wearing a earth tone red/grey woolrich plaid jacket (I bought of someone here)  and worn blue jeans,,,,, I believe the plaids work great but I also beleive that If i was wearing camo those deer would of exploded out of there and never came back,,,,,  I think the plaids work two ways,, #1 they do break you up pretty good but #2 if you are indentified your not indentified as a real threat because you resemeble so many hikers, dog walkers, or regular people these deer see on a day to day basis here... I do also believe just sitting there with plaids on breaks you up enough where your outline is gone too so it works both ways,,,, its just my theory but I've lived it many times and its makign alot of sense to me.

for fun I put up this terrible pic from my junk phone,, look for the doe standing broadside at about 30yds in the center

This is my 5th season in plaids and I have only been busted by my own movement. It seems like I was picked off in camo on a regular basis.

Rob,
The site and the products look great!

Roger, I was thinking the same thing.  I have a nylon camo shirt that I would wear hunting when it was warm weather.  I noticed that the deer could pick me out even when I had not moved at all.  All I could think was that that shirt had a little bit of a shine to it.  I don't wear it hunting any more either.
