Livin' Right
« on: November 05, 2012, 01:08:00 PM »
So 5 years or so ago, my brother asked me to make his client, "Bob", a bow.  I did so just for my brother but the client turned out to be really cool and let my kids and me come out to his property and squirrel hunt and shoot his private 3D range.

So this week my brother tells me that "Bob" wants us to come out to his place and "kill some of these dang deer".  Mike went on Saturday and saw 12 including a buck chasing a doe.  Today he tells me that "Bob" is welcoming us with open arms, that we have access to his 90 wooded acres, that he has a wall tent on it we can use and that no one gun hunts it so it is a deer sanctuary come gun season.  Only 2 other guys hunt it occasionally and it's only 25 minutes from my front door.

These days, when access is so hard to come by, it is refreshing to know that getting it the old-fashioned way, through good relationships, is still possible.  I never expected this one but am very thankful for it.

I am blessed to have 2 other private properties to hunt but they are both 1.5 hours away and make for a long day hunt and early mornings.  This one will allow more hunting and less driving.

I guess my message is to not give up on getting access.  Keep trying by conducting yourself in business and personal affairs in a courteous and upright way and maybe you'll "get" as lucky as Mike and me.

I got lucky as well. I coach XC and Track, so I meet quite a few good people through that. One my now former runners lived on a large piece of property 5 minutes from my house, and her dad is an avid hunter. We spoke often concerning her running and later got to talking about other things. As our friendship grew, he began to take a real interest in trad hunting. As it ended up, I gained not only a place to hunt, but a trad hunting buddy! We hunt about 120 acres with maybe 1-2 other people ever on it. He owns most of that land. It's loaded with deer and it's a wonderful place!

Sounds awesome I like the close to home areas more and more the older I get. Good to hear some folks are still generous.

John, I know that you did what you did because that's the kind of person you are.  You have treated others with kindness, respect and courteousy.  In other words, you have treated others the way you would like to be treated.  That my friend is not luck.  Good for you!  And good example!

Just a little clarification;  Mike has done far more in a business way than I ever did to make this happen.  Treat your customers right...not just because they have 90 acres but because it's the right thing to do (and they have 90 acres)  :)  .
