Nebraska Deer Help............
« on: November 05, 2012, 01:13:00 PM »
Looking at doing this next year as this year got booked up a little fast.  Looking at hitting NE up for some whitetails with my girlfriend, (who has never seen a whitetail lol).  I've been looking around and  considering some of the public in the southwest, mostly around the Reservoirs.  We are not looking for magnum bucks mostly some opps on a few does (not that we would pass a good buck).  Anyone up for passing on a little info?

The majority of the deer in south west Nebraska are Mulies but you will find some whitetails along the river systems.   Not sure about the public land situations out there but Im pretty familiar with our ranch out there.   Farmers and ranchers out in that country encourage you to shoot whitetails instead of mulies due to crop devastation.  The best thing to do is to take a weekend trip over and do some looking around and try banging on doors to see what you might find.   Maybe you can strike up a deal for a private land hunt.

Good luck

Most of the State Parks in the eastern half of the state allow bowhunting after November 1.  Not sure if Fort Robinson (western Nebraska) does or not, but it might be something to look into.

Try around lake McConaghey (spelling?) I'm not sure if there are WMA'S there that allow hunting but there is a TON of deer there, turkeys too if you can snag a tag.
Now then, get your weapons, your quiver and your bow and go out into the open country to hunt some wild game for me.- Genesis 27:3

Better doing some inquiring about the health of the herd as you are making your phone calls as well. A friend of mine has a farm just outside of Omaha that has been crawling with deer. He got hit hard by EHD this fall and isn't even going to hunt it this year. He usually shoots dozens of does off of it each winter. Pretty grim!

Most all of the resevoirs in SW part of the state hold good numbers of both Whitetail and Mulies. Something not to overlook are the WIHA (walk in hunting area) Open fields and Waters program the state has to offer. It's private ground leased to the state on a year by year basis for the sole purpose of hunting, fishing and trapping. You can order the booklet from the NGPC website. I just recently hunted Strunk/Medicine creek Res. and EHD had not effected the area at all on a side note I would try to plan your trip BEFORE pheasant season otherwise it will be CROWDED! If you want more specific info feel free to PM me and I'll try to help ya out.

Thanks for all the info guys, keep it coming!  Someone suggested coming up for turkeys to scout for deer, that is something I might just have to do!!  EHD is no joke, to bad........
