bow holder for ground hunting
« on: November 06, 2012, 10:42:00 AM »
The more time I spend on the ground the more I'm looking for ways to refine my setup. As the weather gets colder I'm wondering what the best option is for a bow stand/holder ...kind of like a fishing rod holder...that I could stick into the ground to keep my bow at the ready while my hands are in their muff. Your input is appreciated.

I wish I could say this was my idea, but it's a good one! Clip to your jacket, harness belt, whatever. Works standing sitting, kneeling. Prop the end ot he limb on the ground and slip the bowstring into the black clip. Nothing to fasten or unfasten. Bow is always ready.

same as Dink but I use the collapsable fishing rod holders that are shaped like a Y but I use 3 of them,,, each limb lays on its side in at the fade out and the string where the arrow is nocked sits in the 3rd one so its about a 1 1/2' above  the ground and laying on its right side with an arrow already nocked (right hand bow)  its quick, silent and less movement accessing the bow but I use a nifty seat which is lower so try first with branches, those collapsable rod holders shrink down to 10" I think.

Thanks, guys. All good ideas. Any other ideas?
Is there anything commercially made specifically for the task?

I had a Third Hand holder. It puts a lot of twist/torque on the lower limb, especially if you have a bow quiver/heavy riser. It also tilts the bow way forward. Last...for my LH bows with a bow quiver it just didn't work, the loop/hook is the wrong way. Also, try to push this in the frozen ground.

I just stand the bow up and lean it back  between my left knee and my body. The arrow is held in place with a gripper. My hands are in my pockets and the bow is right there in near shooting position when needed.

I got a bow holder from  G@$#*% M@*$#@* that stakes in the ground. It has wing nut that allows you to tilt it to the position you want. You can find it around the blind supplies

you said it in your post (fishing rod holder) just get a 2" diameter PVC (black its lighter)pipe 18=24" long and cut a 4" long x(width of the lower limb) slot in it from the top. Cut the bottom on a angle to stick in the ground. An you can smooth the edges with 150 grit sand paper and just sit it in the notch and the lower limb tip will keep it from falling out. Stick a piece of foam in the tube to keep it from making noise when you take the bow out.

I hold mine all the time as well.  I cut a 4"x4" piece of carpeting, left over from recarpeting a boat, that I throw down on the ground to lay my bow tip on.  That keeps it clean, from burying in the dirt and leaves, and quiet too.

I wish I could say this was my idea but I saw it on another site. Made myself one and it works great for ground hunting. You can carry pre cut sticks for it or cut some at your blind and leave em there.

Just insert your sticks then press them into the ground where you want and lean the bow against it.

Just gotta fill those cracks and seal it and it will be ready to go.

A quick update:
After all the great ideas I got from this thread I decided to go with the Third Hand bow holder. It is a simple product that does just what I want it to do. The price is right, and I am very pleased with it.
Again, thanks for all the input!
