BW compared with ILF setup
« on: November 11, 2012, 02:56:00 PM »
Looking for experience from those that have shot both a BW and an ILF setup.  I am currently shooting a 21" excel with TT BM med 40# limbs.  I'm new to ILF and like the adjustability and this combination is a very nice shooter.  But a PMA or a PSA has always been on my "want to try list".  Even just to see why they have such a following.
So if everything were comparable, bow length and poundage, limb materials, etc is there much difference in shooting characteristics with the exception of wood vs metal riser.  Also what BW grip would be close to the excel grip that I really like?  Standard, Asbell, or ?
Thanks, Scott

The standard BW grip is very similar to the Hoyt ortho grip. I shot basically the same ILF setup as you, it was 66" overall and 50# draw. The entire reason I got the excel ILF setup was so I could have a longer recurve that I could string walk with and have the adjustability. I haven't ever shot a BW recurve over my 62" PA III. But the BW really shoots a lot better. Everything about it is fantastic. I also prefer shooting off the shelf, so I don't really enjoy shooting the excel as much because I have to use an elevated rest. Overall, I enjoy shooting pretty much every one of my bows more than my excel ILF setup.  IMO a comparable BW at the same weight is more pleasurable to shoot than any excel ILF setup I've shot. That's not to say there isn't a fantastic ILF rig being made, I just have only had experience with the excel.

Thank you for your reply Thare.

There was a couple of other post here just abit ago.  What happened to them?  Am I breaking some rules by asking a simple question?

It was not my intention to ruffle feathers or to shed an unfavorable light on any product. Was just asking for opinions on different archery set-ups.

So if I said something wrong about shooting a Hoyt, lets say I shoot a Morrison ILF setup with metal riser.  How would u compare that to a BW?

Hi Scott, I have a BW PCH, a PTF and a 2 Morrison ILF risers, one wood and the other metal. I think it's all a personal thing. I love the Widows but I personally like my Morrison metal riser best. I was able to get just the right grip by trial and error and shoot it better day in and day out. I also have a Hoyt Excel and don't care for it. Go figure  ;)  . As far as grip my standard grip on my PCH is a higher grip than the one on my Excel. Again, I think it's a personal thing and what works for me may not be what you like. Sorry I couldn't be of any help.

Ha, its okay Scott. Plenty of people shoot and talk about production recurves.
The forum is not about target shooting or target competition. Its about traditional hunting. So if you are hunting with a metal risered recurve or longbow, thats fine. Doesn't matter if its a Hoyt, Morrison or whatever. So I think maybe just a weird occurance?
As someone stated earlier, some guys will tell you Widows are the best bows in existance, then the next ten will say they arent worth a cent.
You personally have to shoot both to compare for yourself.
By the way, each ILF shoots differently than others. There are VAST differences between ILF setups. VAST!
Its like asking how a recurve compares to a compound. Too many different kinds to give a straight answer.
Shoot 'em and let us know what you think.....

Speaking of Morrison.  What are your thoughts on the carbon/foam ILF limbs vs standard wood/glass.

We were posting at the same time.  Ha. Thanks again for all your help and input.   Only been shooting a metal riser for a month or so and I do like the adjustability and I like the idea of ILF limbs and risers being interchangeable.  But I do already miss the feel of a wood riser.  May even have to tryout a wood ILF.  So many bows to try and so little $$.  ;)

I'm not well versed in ILF limbs by any means and up untill lately, in my limited experience, I had come to the conclusion that the carbon/foam wasn't worth the extra cost. I then bought a set of Morrison Max 1 limbs and they are worth every penny. They are the best limbs I've shot on any riser I put them on. Amazing! Of course they're also the first set of highend limbs I've ever shot. The cheaper carbon limbs I've tried had little if any performance gain and seemed louder to me than wood/glass. Bobs Max 1s are kick butt limbs.

I posted on a similar thread, but don't know what happened to it...irritates me.

Anyway, like I said I have had two BWs and did not care too much for them and it was not because of the quality and service..

I now have a Morrison Phoenix metal riser with Max1carbon/foam limbs and it is awesome. The tune ability is so much easier with the ILF rigs.  This bow is well balanced, quiet and zips an arrow with 250 grains upfront and that is at my 26 inch draw at 42 pounds...go figure!

I have a Morrison ilf rig with Hoyt g3 limbs and have test driven widows.  Both bows are buttery smooth drawing and inherently easy to shoot.  I'd like to own a ptf someday.  The widow takedowns are physically heavy bows.  That's the only thing negative i can say about widows.  The hoyt limbs are better performers but metal risers aren't fun in the cold.  You are asking about two top tier recurves.  I would say decide if you want wood or metal.  I can say i look forward to being able to tune a bowfishing setup on the ilf something fiberglass shafting has prevented until i had a plunger to play with.
If your shooting stinks, work with a Form master.  It'll bring back your A game.

Im just getting a Morrison ILF (wood riser) set up with Border HEX-6 limbs. So far i like the way its is shooting. Ive been shooting my BW PSA V for years now and it just fits me. When ever i go out hunting its just the bow i grab first. The Border limbs load fast but are smooth but the Widow is one of the smoothest bow ive drawn but it will boil do to personal feel for you. Good luck in your quest to find the one that fits you best.

Now i have not had a lot of time with the ILF but i am liking it so for. Will it take the place of my Widow as the first bow i grab, i dont know but time will tell.
