How much to trim off
« on: November 11, 2012, 09:05:00 PM »
Hi Guys

I have finally got around to tuning my recurve. So I started with the arrow I use on my longbow, being a 30.5" easton axis with 225 gain tip. Now the recurve shot beautifully with a 145 grain tip. So I am wondering how much I need to trim off as I still want to shoot 225 grain broadheads as I have a few.

I read somewhere that it is about an inch for every 25 grains is that the case?. I only have a 26 inch draw so i figure I have some room to play around with.

Based on the Stu Miller calculator it looks like 25 grains of pt weight is pretty close to the 1" of arrow length so you should be able to do what you want to do with your arrow finishing around 28".  Again this is based on the Stu Miller Calculator.  Err on the side of caution and work your way there.

I personally would start cutting in 1/4" increments. Carbon will stiffen up real quick on you at least that was in my case with CX150's.

Be very very cautious with carbons since 25 grains will not even Come close to making up the difference in an inch. I would think maybe 1/4 of an inch.
