Iron Mountain bows
« on: November 16, 2012, 08:44:00 AM »
Hi guys, looking for some info. I recently obtained a Iron Mountain recurve 56" 55# in a trade with Lonewolf73 from the classifieds. This bow is the best shooting bow, I have ever had in my hands, and I have some very nice bows. I had never even heard of the Iron Mountain bows prior to this trade. The limbs are barely curved at all. Alomost qualifies as a longbow, LOL, but the thing is incredibly fast and shoots exactly where I am looking.
So here is the question. The string on the bow looks thin compared to the B-50 strings that my other bows have. I have never had a fast flight string and would not know one if i saw it. The tips on this bow are very thick. So much so that I can not string it with any of my recurve stringers. They will not fit on the tips. I have managed to make a longbow stringer work but because of the angle it is a little difficult. Does anyone know if the Iron Mountain bows were made for fast flight? The string that is on it is in very good condition, but I need to get another backup string prior to going to bear Quest. Also does anyone know of a stringer that will work with this bow. I might have to modify a longbow stringer. I can string it the old fashion way but of course would prefer not to. Thanks for any info on the bows....Ed

I believe that Mike Foster of Kingsport, Tenn is the boywer that makes the Iron Mt bows.I had a longbow he made several years ago. He made some nice bows. I think he quit making bows due to health problems.

I ran into the same dilema with a longbow of his.  I never could find out the answer, but what I can tell you is that I tried b50 on it and it wasn't the same bow.  It was alot noisier and had more handshock with b50, would have tried fast flight but I ended up selling it.

I've got a Longbow that I use a selway stringer with no issues.  Although the tips are not overly large.  I do not use fast flight b/c I dont know if it will damage or not.  The B-50 is good enough for me.

That is correct. The bow should fine for Fast Flite.

Mike was working in the fall for an elk outfitter somewhere in the west.

Oh, this bow is also very quiet. At this point I am guessing that it must be a fast flight string on it. The bow sure looks like it is built to take it.

I'm convinced the one I owned had fast flight originally, it sure was a nice, quiet shooter with the original string.  With B50 it was a  useless bow to me, just not the same at all.  And I'm not saying that because I'm hung up on fast flight.  My favorite bows are B50 only and I love them.  If I ever run across another Iron Mountain in my preferred weight range, I would have a hard time passing it up.  The one I owned was a little lighter than I prefer.

Hey Bruinman, Mike Foster made a beautiful longbow for my father. Great shooting bows,  he doesn't have a website and mainly builds for enjoyment of it, from my understanding. So consider yourself lucky to get one of his gems.

Mike Forrester is his name and my longbow he made is fast flight compatible so I assume your recurve would be as well.  Great bow and I wish he would make a couple more for me as my boys both want one.  Bill Leslie won the world championships shooting one of his longbows a few years ago.  My iron mountain has been my go to bow for nearly 9 years now.
