Almost there, Newbie needs a little more help please.

Well, I believe I'm almost there. I got my bow, just put the string on, now needing arrows.

But first question on the string! I bought a 54" string length for my Ben Pearson Mustang recurve (58"ammo). I was told to get 4 inches shorter... So I did. My question is... I put this string on with absolutely no twist that I know of (that I purposely did) and not only was the string seem ridiculously hard to get on... My brace height is already 7.25" from the mouth of the grip part of the bow? I don't know, I though it should be longer/larger brace height and you add twist to find the "sweet spot" on the bow.

If anyone can chime in on this, that would be great... Also, it was a new string so maybe it needs to stretch some? I have the bow stringed right now... How long should/could I allow it to be strung? Or do I need to only have it strung when in use?

then my second question was can anyone point me in a general direction of starter wooden arrows other then 3Rivers? Just trying to find some variety. Thanks all and God Bless!

Happy holidays as well!

I'm sure other will chime in, but I think that's a little low brace height for that bow.  From what I've found online looks like it should be 7-3/4 to 8-1/2. Hopefully others will confirm this.

What kind of string did you buy? Flemish, dacron, fast flight?   You bought the correct length string based on your bow.

For me, when I'm using my bow multiple days in a row it won't hurt it to stay strung. But if I'm not shooting for a couple days I'll unstring it.

Also are you using a stringer? It is easy to twist a limb if your not.

Welcome to trad shooting, good luck!

Had a Mustang that liked about 8" if I remember correctly.

If it is B50 it will stretch for awhile. I always leave mine strung til they settle a bit. I then unstring if I'm not going to shoot for a week or so. My go-to stays strung.

You will eventually get to know the bow and what brace it likes.

Exactly big, I couldn't if I wanted to get to 73/4 or 8 1/2 without the string stretching a little... On the bowstring bag its says "B50" thats all I really know.

I won't lie, I have a stringer ordered and on its way but I was too excited to put the string on tonight... so unfortuantly I used the step through method. I know this is frowned upon, but it was kind of like a kid in a candy shop sort of deal! ya know, lol.

I leave the ones I'm shooting strung. If I'm not going to shoot them for a few weeks I unstring them.

A new B50 string will stretch while strung and even stretch more as you shoot it. It will eventually settle in.

It won't hurt to leave it strung, she will stretch for a while so keep checking brace and nock point position.

I also leave my go to bow strung most of the time. It does not get to sit around very long without being shot.

Also twisting the string shortens it and raises brace height.

Recurve limbs can get twisted easy if your not very careful so be patient and weight on stringer. Just leave it strung until stringer arrives. Probably good to practice draw and form in mirror and it will also start building back muscles up.

B50 is perfect for that bow.

I would twist it up to 8.5" and shoot the crap out of it and leave it strung overnight. Measure again tommorrow adjust and repeat.

Since you are new I would stay around 8" and not worry about finding that perfect tune yet. Focus more on your form and having fun right now.

Rob

P.S. Measure from the deepest part of the grip.

10 4, awesome... thanks guys... I'm just going to keep drawing the bow back like suggested above. I'm mentaly thinking what my body needs to be doing so I'm at least not just sitting anymore and at least "working" on something so that should keep me at bay until I can get some arrows. I was thinking backwards as for twist and brace height. So I will just give it a few days to stretch and keep an eye on the BH.

Rob, I'll get it to 8 and hold her round there for the next few week, at least until I can start shooting.
