Carbon Collars or Not?
« on: December 13, 2012, 12:48:00 PM »
Hey Guys,

Those of you that shoot carbon shafts for hunting...
Do you use collars on the front of your shaft or Not?

How big of a difference do you think carbon collars are for hunting?

Well, so far it looks like 63% are not using carbon collars on their hunting arrows.

That makes me feel better about my current collarless setup. Now, for stumping or 3D I think I will be putting some type of collars on.

I shoot Carbon Express Heritage with brass inserts. They are plenty tough. The inserts extend the shaft just enough where you don't really need collars.

I use them because I shoot Easton Axis and 175 gr points. If you don't use them you can't pull your arrows out of bag targets. They are a hair bigger then my field points, so I sand them down with my table belt sander.

I also use long 100 grain brass inserts in my CT Cheetah 400 shafts. I also hope that the insert might help some in terms of durability.

I don't like the pre-made collars available from 3Rivers etc. I like the ones made out of aluminum shafts, I just need to build a simple jig for my dremel tool. Freehand ones came out kinda funky..

Kinda surprised at the results...I don't use collars, but keep thinking I am behind the curve.

Almost all of my broken arrows are the result of hard stumps that break the arrow right at the collar area.  I figure I should get off my lazy butt and glue on some collars...haven't so far and now it looks like I have many friends. :-)

Though now that I found out they no longer make the Beman MFX's, I better give my last couple sets some love...

So a carbon collar is something that screws in the end of your arrows and its main purpose is durability?
I shoot Beman MFX Classics 500s with75gr HIT inserts. 150gr field point. Amazing durability. Do alot of stump & ground mound (rocks) type shooting. Most failure occurs over time at the tip. I've straightened bent tips back to shoot them again. Often between trees and rocks it seems the field point drives back into the shaft causing the putter carbon layer to split and peal back toward the nock. Makes me nervous about driving fibers into hand. Any collar photos out there?
