Question of footing carbons with alum sleeve
« on: December 19, 2012, 02:18:00 PM »
Those of you shooting the footed arrows can probably help me out before I waste a lot of time re-inventing the wheel.

Do you use a longer shaft, or draw the footed part back onto the shelf. If you draw the footing back onto the shelf/side plate, doesn't this affect your "cut to center" distance and maybe require a nock height change?

Ron,

I footed my carbons and have a really long draw, so I left my arrows full length. I think due to my radius shelf I can't notice any movement up and down since it doesn't contact the shelf at the aluminum footing. I also don't have the aluminum hitting my strike plate. It seems it could make a slight difference if the aluminum were to touch either. Although the difference would only be .016" from my aluminum footings (2216) and I think on my set up it would only make a difference of less than 1# in arrow spine. I don't shoot well enough to notice that difference, I guarantee you.  :)

Great question as I have wondered this too...

I draw mine back onto the shelf but have not really noticed any negative affect from it.

just foot some for first time about 2 weeks ago. i draw 29 or so and use gold tips full length (~30). i wondered the same thing but can notice no difference. I think the width of the aluminum as ntoed above, is minimal and unless some one shoots like byron ferguson (i'm at the other end of the spectrum), we are not likely to notice any differecne. best of lukc. so far my seem bullet proof.

Sounds like most of us are in the "less than perfect" class and I'm glad to hear I can probably get away with it without adversely affecting my way-too-loose groups.

Thanks guys.

My footings do not touch any part of the bow shelf or rest so there is no interference. My arrows are 1" longer than my draw so there is no problem whatsoever.

I draw 29+ and shoot my carbons full length.  I use about an 1 1/8" footing and haven't had any problems shooting them from any of my bows.  They are tough.....love 'em.

I just made up about 6 of these a few weeks ago. I use full length gt 3555 shafts for stumping just in case they do get damaged i can save the arrow but thats not a problem now; all i have broken are few nocks. I have a few that have previously been damaged and cut that i draw onto the shelf and have not noticed a difference in accuracy.

I shoot a 1.25" footing and cut my arrows 1.25" long, probably would have no effect, just dont like the Idea of fealing the foot touch anything. I like my arrows an inch long anyways for broadhead clearance. Really no downside to a slightly longer arrow.
