Who makes a good youth longbow?
« on: August 19, 2007, 09:23:00 PM »
Seems the last few months I have been asked to teach archery to a few young folks, Boy Scouts, Venture Scouts, and such.  Since I am partial to longbows, and am always looking for a good reason to buy another, who makes a nice durable inexpensive wood longbow (no fiberglass if I can help it)that would be suitable for young folk?

I am thinking not more than about 25# or so, as I have been asked to teach a few girls also, and some younger boys that don't have the physical strength.  (A couple of the Boy Scouts I just finished the Archery merit badge used some of my bows and did just fine, but they are closer to being grown than not.)  Anyway, let the advice begin!

Rhino longbows are really nice for kids but they aren't cheap.

I say MadDog Trad. Archery.  Mike makes a great youth lb for 1/2 the price of Rhino.  I sold my Rhino as soon as I got my MadDog.  He teaches kids as well.   www.tradstore.com/mta

Also take a look at Kustom King. They have self bows that are very reasonable in price. I think we paid about $35 for my son's.

What John Scifres said the Rattan Bows, you will find all the info you need on Dean Torges web site.

Besides they are fun to make and the Kids and Fathers can join in the Bow making process. You can make several Bows from a single piece of Rattan. Contact Dean and He will be more than glad to assist you. Above all have FUN...ONE SHOT...  :)    :)    :)

I think you have already recieved a lot of excellent advice and it would all depend on what your long term goals are if you want these bows to last a long time and be able to teach a lot of kids you need to go to either the black rhino or the mad dog both are excellent quality and will last for years my club has 5 black rhinos and my son and my daughter have black rhinos and they are all excellent quality as for the mad dog pup bows I don't have a lot of personal experience but Pete Ward has done a review on them and I have seen them shoot and they are a fine looking bow. As for the ratan bows I can say that the ATBA recently held a bow building course for the kids that was a incredible success and the kids had a wonderful time but I can already see a little set on one of the bows my kids made so I think you just need to examine your goals and go from there if you need any more help at all let me know Delin     Youth Director ATBA
