Best Goat Hunt?
« on: January 05, 2013, 10:33:00 PM »
I love hunting steep rugged country for goats but can't seem to draw a tag here in Montana and cringe at the thought of shelling out 10 grand to hunt out of country for mountain goats.
I would like to do a few more rough hunts while I'm young.
What do you think the best goat hunt for your money is?  A Hawaii coastal hunt,  perhaps a free range New Zealand adventure for Chamois and Tahr?
Wintertime seems like the perfect time to dream up a new adventure!

My dream hunt is a tahr.  Catalina Island ysed to have great hunting, but they gunned them down.   Hawaii might be your best option

Hi Shane,
How you been?  I just got done watching a rifle hunting video and a lot of the country looked really tough with a bow for tahr.  Do you believe they are more "bowhuntable" in certain parts of the island than others?   Did you have trouble with people helecoptoring  into areas you may have busted your butt hiking into?

Chris, There's always Isla Mona. Simple Spanish Goats, but it's a beautiful, remote place almost no one has been to. Check the Isla Mona thread for a picture of Steve Hohensee's goat. Jay  www.campbellsquest.com

I did the Kauai, Hawaii goat hunt this past August, and would do it again in a heartbeat.

Here was the thread I did.  I would definately hunt the Kalalau Valley next time.  And give myself atleast 5 days to hunt, more would be better.

Those Spanish goats on Isla Mona look awesome just not sure if I'm brave enough for big bugs... would love to hear some more about New Zealand and its rugged country.  Will do a search as soon as I get back from looking for some snowshoe hares this afternoon.

ozzyshane-That pic won't last but great job on both animals!

But to answer the OP's question, yeah, NZ is the best answer.  A guy could have a heck of a mountain adventure for a few thousand dollars (coming from the States).

absolutely do New Zealand! take the rockies and then squeeze them like a concertina, then you have the southern alps. IMO steeper and more rugged. the country you see in sheep and mt goat photos never looks as steep as tahr country. like shane said DIY hunts over there are easy to organise even for foriegners. hunt on public land for free 365 days a year in almost all places. it is absolutely one of the great mountain hunts of the world. you could easily do this sort of hunt $500 including food, car hire and hotels either side of the time in the bush. little more than twice that though if you want to hire a chopper to drop you into and pick you up from the hunt area. including flights you will easily do it cheaper than a mt goat hunt and you can do it whenever you want to. no waiting half your life for a tag.

here's some pics-

Free range aoudad in Texas will fill any goat sheep craving you have. The aoudad is one hell of a trophy.
