Leather grip on a recurve?
« on: January 17, 2013, 09:12:00 PM »
So I was shooting yesterday in 43 degree heat, (which for those of you on the imperial system is about 110) and after about  an hour I couldn't repetitively keep shots straight since my bow was sliding around in my hand and just wasn't consistent. I've seen plenty of them on longbows but the only bowyer I've seen put the grips on a recurve is Tim from Acadian woods. I presume it would encourage torquing, but in the heat would it work beter?

I've wondered how it would feel myself.  I'm pretty sure one guy here has at least one with leather.  Goes by the handle arrow30, maybe he'll see this or maybe send him a pm.

Get a bow saddle which is a piece of leather with a adhesive back, that goes on the grip. They used to be pretty popular, I think they are still available. One would allow you to see if a full grip would be of benefit without the hassle of fitting a full grip to the riser.

Try wrapping a thin tennis raquet wrap on your grip. Thin, cheap [2.00] and easily removable. Keeps grip good even with sweating, and protects from damage on bow with wedding band. Works for me. Roy
Maybe it is time to shoot what I have on the rack

You could always try a rubber Shurgrip on it.

I have a leather grip, similar to the bow grip on my recurve. I like it.

i put a leather grip on my recurve. more challenging than on a longbow type grip but if you work it and stretch it, you can get it done. i like the look and more so the feel. definitnley feels better in my hand than directly against the wood. other options (rubber, tennis racquet grip, etc) woudl work, but its a traditional bow and my opinion those look out of pocket on a trad bow.

Fred Herman of Flying Eagle Bows puts a leather grip on the recurves that he makes. They look and shoot awesome.

A bow saddle is the answer... check 3Rivers. Other options are to paste wax the grip (apply but don't polish) and of course checkering is classy and works perfectly.

i put a leather grip on my kodiak mag, i prefer it to a slippery wood grip.

i also put one on a martin savannah.

checkering or stippling will be my next adventure..

eric, i bet that widow would look good with a buckskin leather grip..  :goldtooth:

That's kinda what I was thinking Bryant, I may have to do something about that.  The grip on your K-Mag looks great.

Somebody had a picture up a while back of a beavertail grip that they had Big Jim install on a Black Widow recurve.  Looked very cool, and seems like it'd be just the ticket. I'm thinking about calling Big Jim and having him put one on my recurve.

I put a piece of tanned deer hide on a high-wrist grip one time and I was glad I did. Very comfortable to shoot and it helped absorb some shock.  As long as you don't put a death grip on your bow, torque shouldn't be a problem.

The brown beavertail is my favorite. Nice look and texture!
