stock arrows too short any suggestions?
« on: January 19, 2013, 09:18:00 PM »
I bought a sammick sage as a cheap option to explore trad archery.  My draw length is 30" and the bow is about 45# at my drawlength.  My problem is finding arrows.  It was suggested that I shoot 2018 if I go aluminum.  Based on the 3rivers website info and my local archery shot, these easton arrows start at less than 31" which would be my minimum length based on drawlength.  My local shop says they can get me cedar arrows at 32" which would probably work. I just want to get some options I can bare shaft tune myself, so carbon are largely out.  I would consider them, but I also hear that they may be too stiff for my lowish draw weight.

Basically, I am open to wood, aluminum and maybe carbon.  Does anyone have any other suggestions for aluminum that would satisfy my length requirements?

First, Welcome to the brotherhood.

Second, if you are new to shooting trad equipment focus on your form for a good amount of time. You will be able to tune arrows when you get your form down pat and in a good routine. Right now if you go to tune arrows with not so good form you will get false readings in arrow flight which equates to spending more money trying to find the right arrows etc..etc..

But if comfortable with your form then go with a heavy spined arrow like 55/75 goldtip or something similar and then just adjust point weight.

Good luck and best hunting.

not aluminum, but check big jim's website. He has some carbons that are 32" that will work for a great price.

I'm liking wood right now but I would start with carbon. Something in a .500 spine @ 31" with 150gr. up front should do the trick.
All aluminum, carbon and wood I have delt with were over 31".

A CE heritage 150 is hard to beat.

For aluminium the black gamegetters come 32" I believe.
This stuff ain't no rocket surgery science!

Welcome to the Gang! If your compositing your draw length to what you shot with a wheel bow you might actually draw shorter than you think. Where in Ohio are you?

Gump21Bravo - I was thinking about fletching one myself so that I could do a few for early practice on form and then I could tune the rest of the batch later.  I like the idea that I can cut down a long arrow with a soft spine to stiffen it and get a better flying arrow.  I am not as thrilled about carbon because I don't have the saw to trim them.  I just don't want to spend all the money on a dozen only to find the spine is wrong and unfixable.

magnus - I measured my drawlength on a trad bow with a marked arrow.  I am in the Wooster area.

The guy I bought the bow from can sell me all of the materials I need for a dozen cedar shafts and the supplies to fletch them for ~$100.  I would just need to get the stains to finish them from a hardware store.  Sound like a good deal?  I am thinking that may be the easiest route since aluminum will be hard to find in the right size and carbon is harder to work with at home.  Sound good?

Welcome to traditional archery.    :archer2:

here's a little drawing to double check to correct way to measure draw length that might be helpful.

Go to McD's get a large pop, drink it on your way home, when you are done take the top put it on an arrow and pull it back, do this a few times until you get a consistent measurement.  Easiest way to do it by yourself.
