5/16 wood arrows questions
« on: January 21, 2013, 01:06:00 PM »
check this out I'm looking for 5/16 wood arrows in 40/45 and 45/50 but I want a 525 grain to 550 grain finished weight using 125gr heads (125's for now for tuning issues) ..

I'm wondering if any of you shoot the same with the same or heavier grain finished weights..  I have finished arrows from elite and wildeness and they are great but when I need heavier weights I'm thinking I have to do these myself...wondering about coating them more or using a special coating to make them heavier.

I'm working with some 5/16" Sitka spruce shafts from Hildebrand right now that are 45/49 spine at 340-350 grains for the dozen. Something like this could get you close. They may have some even heavier if you give them a call; good folks to work with.
You could try soaking the shafts full length in Minwax Wood Hardener to see what kind of weight gain you get.

You can ask your supplier for heavier shafts within a # range and most times they will do that, for an extra cost of course.
You can increase weight about 15 gns per dip and you can soak them in oil, allow to dry completely and then dip.
You could also ask Wilderness or Elite to use 5/16 in a heavier mass weight and they should be able to do that and help you hit your target weight.

An old Bowhunter that is long past used to put wood arrow shafts in a,tube with some sort of penetrating oil .
They would soak up oil for several days.
He would then weigh them and the lighter ones went back in.
Eventually he would dry them and coat them, with shellac.

What you're looking for is pretty hard to find in cedar.  Keep in mind, too, that if you find shafts physically heavy enough and/or increase their weight by soaking or finish coats, you may need to go up in spine as well. And, 45-50# is on the higher end already for 5/16 shafts.  Good luck.

I shot some deer with laminated birch, they easily made that range.  They were a bit more sensitive to which bow I shot them out of than some heavy 5/16" cedars that is was using prior. Still, with the bow they liked, they made the bow feel very soft in hand, flew straight and pass throughs were the norm.

Soak them in Watco oil for a few days.
Give Twig Archery a call. Their ramin shafts are heavier than cedar.
Good luck.
God bless,

PS Got to love those skinny 5/16 shafts!

Bulk order 5/16 dowel rods.  At $28/100 it's a great deal.  Takes a little energy to match and straighten them out, but I typically get 80 or so usable shafts.  A few really good ones worthy of a broadhead, a bunch that work fine as target shafts and small gamers, and the rest that work as flu flus for any other purpose.  All in all it's a pretty good deal.

thanks for all the posts,,, I guess soaking them in oil would be last resort cause you know I'll end up with oil all over the place..   but I'll check those other suggestions..   I was thinking it would be as easy as just re-dipping the shafts over and over maybe even a heavier lacquer.

as for 5/16's, the two selfbows that shoot these just hit so good BUT I change back and fourth from recurve to selfbow and the skinnier shafts make it much easier to maintain decent accuracy.
