Vpa or treeshark

For those of you that have shot both what are your thoughts on the two. Flight characteristics, blood trails etc.  I have been shooting the 1-1/4" vpa with great results but can't stop looking at the treesharks that a mean looking head what's your opinions for you guys that have shot both.

I'll let others speak to the blood trails but the tree sharks fly like darts. I have shot them in heavy cross winds out to 40 yards with no issues. Just remember that you can never have too many broad heads.

I would use the VPA. I tried treesharks but they are a little
wide for my liking.

Shoot them both as long as you can get them both to fly well. I shot the 2 and 3 blade vpa's this year. I think im going to try to shoot the tree sharks as well as the 3 blade vpa next season. Two of each in the quiver.

I have killed several deer with Both heads.  They both shoot great.  Blood trails have so many variables.  But for the most part I have had  better trails with the treesharks.

I'll stick with my sharks. I have yet to NOT get a pass thru with any of my bows from 44# to 57#. Best blood trails I have ever had even tho I haven't needed them.

Do not see any VPA 1 1/4" dia. BH's on the VPA website. Assumed you were referring to the VPA 3 Blade.

..................................................Slash Factor
Terminator 1 1/8" 200 gn 3BL.............20.25

Simmons 'Tree Shark' 190 gn 2Bl........24.0

Having comparable penetration and identical marks from both BH's should result in an enhanced voluminous blood trail due to the Tree Shark design.

Hey Friend,

I loved your slash factor info that you posted awile back. but I can't remember if that listing included the slash factor on a Big Jim big 3 broadhead which is made by VPA and has a 1 1/2 cut. do you know the slash factor on that head?

As far as sharks or VPA I have killed deer with both, and I really like both heads so I say you can't go wrong with either. Try them both and see what like the best.

I have a bunch of vpa 250 1 1/4 they were a special run.  On the slash factor I am fairly certain that a Simmons Original Interceptor which is 1 9/16 and a bleeder of 1" will surpass any other heads slash factor if not would be neck and neck.  And it is absolutely devastating.  And I also have some of the original Treesharks that you can add bleeders too.

I have killed deer with both and both worked well.  For me the Simmons did more damage and hold an edge longer.

As to the slash factor, I will say this.  I have killed several truck loads full of deer with 1 9/16" Simmons Interceptors and Landsharks with bleeder blades.  Great bloodtrails.

I have killed at least a couple of truck loads with the Treeshark.  While the slash factor is higher on the Interceptors/Landsharks with bleeders, the Treesharks consistently produce better bloodtrails, time and again.  This has also proved true for a good friend of mine, who has many kills (more than me) with both.

There's a tendency for Treeshark holes, in the skin and flesh, to sag.  Most of the wounds I see tend to be shaped like a football, and are large enough to require at least 3 fingers to plug the hole.

I've killed a few animals with the Big Jim head.  Matter of fact, I made the first kill in North America with it (A guy killed in Africa with it a couple days before me).  Jim handed me a prototype at a tournament and asked me to shoot something with it.  It's a good head, but it won't hold a candle to the Treeshark in terms of bloodtrail.  The wounds I've seen made by even the largest of 3 blades could be plugged with your thumb.

Just for argument sake....

Would everybody still feel the same way if we were talking about Elk broadheads?

I've never hunted elk, so I can't draw from personal experience, but remember Dave telling me about a guy in the Bitterroot Valley who has killed around a dozen elk with Treesharks out of longbows.

I'm thinking really hard about an elk hunt this fall, and if it happens I'll find out first-hand what a Treeshark will do.

As for elk....... my quiver was full of vpa's this last season my next elk hunt it will be full for interceptors if not tree sharks and I think my buddy that hunted with me will agree.

The only experience I have is with the VPA heads. I shot a bull elk at 25yds or so this year. When the arrow hit him (quartering away) he didn't bolt, run away or even show signs he was hit. He took a few steps tried to raise his head to bugle, at this point there was alot of blood coming from his nostrils. He took two more steps and tipped over. There was no exit hole, however, Helen Keller could have followed the short blood trail. I can't think of any head doing any better.

I've also shot critters with both. Right now I'm using the sharks (I can't remember which but its a glue on 135) they are both great heads! That said it comes down to which one you are most confident with. I will have the Simmons in my quiver this year for elk and deer.

I have looked at using the Simmons broadheads but I just can't get that whole edge sharp so I stick with my VPA 3 blades. Excellent blood trails and awesome penetration.

I draw 68 lbs at my draw length with high FOC arrows that weigh 750 grains. I have no worries about the Tree sharks on elk. The owner of Simmons Sharks told me he shot a large bull a few years ago with a tree shark and the broad head broke the offside shoulder blade and ended up a good 6 inches out the offside shoulder.
