Zwickey Scorpios on POC?
« on: January 25, 2013, 07:30:00 AM »
Anyone using the Scorpios with wooden arrows?  I shoot 11/32" and looking for a broadhead setup for turkeys.  I'd like to shoot my Zwickey Eskimos with the Scorpios behind them, but I noticed their description says they're for aluminum and carbon only.

Any ideas?

They will be a tight fit on the shaft and really mess up the finish.  I've seen a leather washer used with decent success.

Yeah, that's what i was worried about.  I've never seen anything on leather washers.  Sounds interesting.  I'd be worried about arrow flight, but I guess you don't need alot of KE for turkeys.

What are other's using for turkey broadheads on wood arrows?

You need more than you think for turkeys.  Their feathers slow down an arrow considerably.  Too, a turkey is a light bird, when it's hit, it's entire body moves, absorbing the force of the arrow and reducing penetration. I've killed a couple of turkeys with 2-blade Eskimos and Magnus 2s.  Didn't get a complete pass through with ether, nor with other heads I've used. (50-55# glass laminated hybrids and recurves). I wouldn't be worried about shooting through them.  Most times you won't. And better if you do.  Better blood trail.  Feathers soak up a lot of blood as well.

Thanks, Orion.  Some good insight here.  I'll be shooting a similar setup as you.  I'll just shoot my Eskimos and gain some experience.  Thanks!

Yeah. I never want to reduce penetration on turkeys. Orion is correct, they are tough birds. I can count on one hand the birds I've had complete pass throughs on with heavy arrows and I've shot a lot of birds. Both with 50-55# longbows and compounds upwards of 80#'s. most complete pass throughs were not ideal shots, but lethal none the less.
