I'd like to try shoot some wood - need help.
« on: January 26, 2013, 08:18:00 PM »
I'd like to get some arrows made up for 2 of my Longbows but need some help with spine selection.

Both bows are MOABs.  One is 53# @ 28" and one is 54# @ 28".  I pull 27".  My preference would be to shoot 125 gr points and arrows to be 30".  I would like to try Douglas Firs.

What spine should I look at getting?

You should be around 60# spine depending on string type and center cut of bow

Center cut on the MOAB is 1/16".  Both have SBD 8 strand strings on them.

I, too, think 60# plus or minus a little will work. Why 30 inch arrows (BOP?) for a 27-inch draw?

Orion,
I've always shot 30" carbons.  That's what I'm used to.  Not sure I want to change that while I'm experimenting with wood.

Wood is very different from carbon.  I have found wood to me much more forgiving so far as tuning and arrow flight.  Plus, if you leave the wood a bit long and they break while stump shooting, retaper the shaft and put on another Judo point.  You can't do that with carbons.
The extra length will not have much effect on the spine of the arrows, but most guys find it distracting to have a bunch of arrow hanging out over the front of the bow.
If you are not sure about the correct spine, how about putting an ad out here seeking a couple of different shafts for experimenting. I don't know if Three Rivers still sells singles or not.  It can't hurt to call and ask about a couple in 55-60, a couple in 60-65, etc

I'm saying 60# minimum easy and maybe even 60-65 65-70 only because of the 8-strand SPD srings, they really weaken the spine on carbon arrows so I'm assuming woods be just as bad.

Elite  arrows are among the BEST and will send you 3 test arrows to try before placing an order...
