xx78 easton's for upper 50# bow
« on: February 03, 2013, 09:51:00 AM »
I have been trying to find some xx78 2018's but am not having any luck. Just wondering if anybody has tried anything like a 2117, 2216 etc for this weight as I can get as many of these as I want. I draw 28.5 but I dont mind if the arrow is longer to get the spine right. Its a plus for added arrow weight anyways. thx

2117s may work, but a lot will have to do with how center shot your bow is.  2216s are pretty stiff, I would try 2117s first.

I would think 2016s would work unless you are using heavy points or trying to build a hign FOC arrow.

I can try a 2117 as I think I have a couple here. They arent xx78's though. I read somewhere that they are tough as heck so thats why I wanna try those.

I have plenty of 2016 and 2018's but not xx78's. They shoot well from the bows I have but they are xx75's.

There is really not a lot of difference between xx78s and xx75s. xx75s are just a little straighter but I doubt even very good trad shooters could measure the accuracy difference.  I believe the difference in strength is xx75s have a yield stress of 96,000 psi and xx78s have a yield stress of 102,000 psi., or something like that. Unless you are bending up a lot of arrows stump shooting or spending lots of money on dangerous game hunts I doubt the price difference is justified. Try xx78s if they interest you, but if you can not get them in an arrow size the works good for your bow and shooting conditions I would not worry about it.

I love 2117 xx78s in the mid to high 50 lb bow range. All my bows are center shot though. But for toughness and straightness and a flat out great hunting arrow there's nothing better. I do shoot woods too though. they are a bit classier. LOL there's just something about good woods I love.

I had a 58# longbow that loved 2117's. I also have a 59# bow that likes 2018's (also a 65# bow that likes them). I have used the xx75's and xx78's and could tell no significant difference in them. For a number of years now, I have shot wood arrows almost exclusively.

I shoot 2216's with 145-175 heads and they fly very well out of my recurves.  XX78 are definitely tougher can be found in 2216's if you look. Easton makes 400's which would be 2117's in xx78.

When talking about toughness I can speak from years of experience, I have use xx75s and xx78s since they both came out and have hit thousands of stumps and a few rocks with each of them. If you are good at straightening arrows then buy the xx75s.
they bend twice as easy as xx78s , the old gamegetters bend twice as much as xx75s. I have no memory of ever bending an xx78. However I have blown the tips clear off of a bunch of them on rocks shooting at rabbits and grouse. they will blow up several inches back on a hard hit. However you can cut them short and put in a new insert and use them when the grouse is in the trees . xx75s on the other hand will take a warp and not break. If you are good at straighening arrows then xx75s work great. Personally I love the wood grained xx78 Legacys and I usually crown dip them white and bar feather them. They are my favorite arrow.
God bless you all, Steve

For bows in the upper 50# to mid 60# you will probably need a 2213 if you are trying to stay in the 10gpp ball park. 2117 is going to be really stiff even in a center shot bow unless you go long on length and heavy on point.
