Eclipse & Steel Adapter - UGH!
« on: August 22, 2007, 09:09:00 AM »
Mounted some points last night (it is my first time doing this).  Used Ferr-L-Tite, heated the insert and stick over an alcohol burner.  Got things nice and gooey.  Air cooled them.

Two of the three came off in my target!!! (the 3 WW's I did too, didn't).

Any tricks to this?  What might have gone wrong?

Clean the adapter and the inside of the ferrule of the broadhead thoroughly with denatured alcohol or 91 percent isopropyl. Sometimes machine pressed part have a releasining agent like light oil or grease left on them from the production line. If the adapters were handled much by bare hands residual oils or grime could contaminate the bond. Hope this helps,   Grant

I always have problems with the steel adapters so just use aluminum.

Most likely paint or dirt inside ferrule.  I rough-it-up inside with a round file, clean with denatured alcohol and use amber hot melt.

Heat the points until they smoke.  Wipe them clean.  Now mount them.

The steel adapters themselves have manufacturing residue on them, they need a good cleaning before use.  The aluminum adapters need no cleaning, but the inside of all broadheads should be cleaned before mounting any type of adapter.

Bob I don't really go for a certain weight up front.Only what it takes to shoot the broadhead I want.I want what is up front to match feild points that are availible so stay in the 175 or 200gn range when tuning.Since I shoot big broadheads aluminum gets me there very easy.If I need more weight I would go with a brass insert in the shaft.jmo

The eclipse b/h's have a teflon coating that often gets inside the ferrule. Take a rattail file and clean them out ...scrapping down to clean steel...I then take a 3/8 NPT tap and kinda' thread the inside. Clean the ferrule with alcohol. Sand the adapter lightly and clean with alcohol. Use epoxy...not 5 minute epoxy though.

I glued up some Zwickeys and steel inserts last night. I wipe the inserts with my wife's nail poish remover and clean the inside of the BH with a cue-tip dipped in the same remover. I use goat tuff and have not had any problems. Gilbert

I glue all my steel inserts with cheap "craft" hot melt glue.  Just be sure to burn off the oils from each piece before hand.  I have a cube style target that really holds the arrow.  Takes two hands to pull them most times.  Never had a broadhead pull off yet.

Nail polish remover is not always the best choice.  It often has oils in it to make it easier on the skin.

100% Acetone is better and cheaper.

If using epoxy, always use the 24 hour type.  The 5 minute epoxy cures too brittle for arrows.
