Sharpening single bevel broadheads

For those who hunt with single bevel broadheads, esp. No Mercy single bevels, how do you sharpen them? Does the KME sharpener work? Thanks

As long as it's a two blade the KME is the cat's meow.

Just create a burr on the non bevel side. Then lightly take the burr off.

KME works great but for speed a bench grinder and paper wheel sold by Abowyer is tops. Can do a single bevel to, as they say, scary sharp in about 30-45 seconds after a little practice.

Now that being said about the paper wheel, I use the KME knife sharpener with a cut off half round file and short crock sticks to do my Simmons heads.

No mercy are a pain. There is copper brazing that helps hold the lams of steel together. Brazing doesn't sharpen. So you will likely notice that the back part of the blade gets sharp, but not the front.  You have to get through that brazing to steel.  Takes a little attention and work, but it works out.  I don't use them because of this problem, among other reasons.

I have used KME's knife and broadhead sharpeners with excellent results.These days,I am using the KME broadhead sharpener.Here is a "How To".

I use single bevel Abowyer Brown Bears. I use a rosin wheel with jewelers rough. I do 4 or 5 light passes on the bevel side and one or two light passes on the opposite side without the bevel. I can't sharpen worth a darn but I get these razor sharp in seconds. The only problem is I can't take it with me.

I watched Ray Hammond sharpen a single bevel with a file and leather strop. He got the broadhead sharper and faster than I could on a the wheel. I am going to learn this from Ray if it kills me this year. You can take a file and leather strop with you.

He resharpened my head. I had it in my hand while I watched him sharpen other heads. I just touched my other hand with it by accident and I bled all over his deck. I bled like one of his stuck pigs.

With the new bevels alredy established on the Abowyer and grizzly heads, I found that using the wheels is really easy.

I run the head over the slotted wheel about 4 times and they are scary sharp. I don't even use the gritted wheel.

Agreed. Because the tips are triple laminated, it's darn near impossible to get a true single bevel geometry on the front 1/2 of the No Mercy.

I sharpened some with a file.  Created the burr then flipped and gave it one really light stroke on the back side.  A couple of swipes with a crock stick helped to.

I agree with what Charlie Lamb says about the KME. It's all I use on my heads and knives.
