D&M Custom Arrows and the ROCK TEST add Footed test !!
« on: February 26, 2013, 03:31:00 PM »
I have been playing around with some new arrows, to pass time in the winter here in CT. Too much snow ,  so I started making inventory and testing new shafts for the D&M.  I have posted what I have in the classifieds for new inventory.  I hope you like what you see.
And I have a project in the works for some of these arrows out on the market.  As most of you know the arrow industry is a big one, and there is a lot to pick from. So I thought I would do a little R&D and beat up some arrows to see how well they really hold up to the punishment of TRAD SHOOTERS.

Today I went outside and shot 8 different arrows at the big rock in my back yard!! YES THIS WAS FUN!!

All 8 arrows lost to the rock, so Rock is up by 8 at this point!

2 that held up the best by staying together was a 390 AC Pro Hunter ( one of my favorite) and a MFX Axis arrow and a Grizzly Stick , sure the point slammed into the shaft spreading the carbon out but they  held together. Everything else was shattered or broken off never to be found. I blame this on the wall thickness of the arrows.

URL=http://images.imagelinky.com/1361910258.JPG]   [/URL]
What I am getting at is all the arrows out there are going to break at one point or another, we all miss and we all play and try to take that shot to far away on the 3D course for fun,  or stumping with our buddies and we dump an arrow into the ground. It’s hard not having fun in this sport. But why spend the money on a gimmick that the arrow manufactures try to sell us.   A thick walled arrow tuned right will outlast most out there.  I love the Easton Epics or IONs or the new Aftermath for the money I feel they are the best for me!

I am not out to bash anyone or their products ,arrows are like beer and trucks. Some like FORD and Chevy and some like Bud over Bud Light. I will never be that guy that tells anyone what to drink or Drive just don’t do them at the same time.
But if you ask me my opinion I might give it to you.   (I LIKE GUINNESS)
I hope this will help people picking out there new arrows for the upcoming hunting and 3D/Target season. This is for everyone on a tight budget like me finding a good arrow that will hold up to TRAD FUN and not having to worry about emptying your wallet on arrows.
AT the end of it all, every arrows is  going to break its just how much money do you want to spend on a set!
All arrows were harmed in this post the rock is doing fine and will be recovering in a day or two!
Theses arrows were all around the same spine with a 250grain point shot out of my Morrison T/D 55lbs at 30"

It would be interesting to see what would've happened if the arrows were footed.
Just a thought.  :archer2:

I would like to see them footed also if you’re going to blow up some more.  Please do! I would like to see the results.  I can tell you from my experience that some of them will still be trash and others will be fine.

The AC and ICS are what I don't like to see when one fails.  I have seen the ICS do a lot of long splinter breaks way up the arrow.  That scares me as the ICS is the only one to ever give me a carbon splinter when I pick one up and it had a hardly noticeable fractured mid shaft.

The MFX and Grizzly stick have the kinds of damage I see with the GT trad where about the worst I can do is mushroom the point a little and typically cut off 2” and have a safe and solid shaft left.

I think wall thickness is maybe a factor, but the way the fibers are woven is probably more of a factor given I use the same insert in 4 different arrows with very little difference in OD and big difference in structural integrity.

I can’t wait for the mourning guys I built a few Footed shafts and will take them out on the rock.

I have never used footed arrows and really looking forward to see how they perform.

Carbons are all layered out differently and no one has the best shaft out there. But they all say they have the best.
Xtrema 312 is right in a way they will break differently depending on the layering of the carbon. And some will be stronger than others for sure.

I hope this footing will make them even stronger. And if this works I may start offering a footing service for carbon arrows.

I am already in the arrow shop playing!!!!

What distance are you shooting?

Footings have not saved my ICS shafts from rock hits. They have on my GT and CX shafts.  All but the one GT I shot into a steel plate at 15 yards.  It hit at an angle and that caused it to slap and skid into a  corner before  it stopped dead.  That bent the brass insert a lot, cracked the footing full length and split the shaft end 1 1/2".

Please try some footed carbons! dying to see the results. If one layer of aluminum footign is good, then a footing over a footing must be even better.

500 spine carbon with a 2117 footing, with a 2314 footing over that? because rocks are a heavy boned animal.

FOOTED ROCK TEST PART 1

Well I thought the rock would win again and it did!!

But we dont shoot at rocks, we miss and from time to time they do get in front pf the arrow and do it in.

So here is a set I made last night one is a AC Pro hunter footed with a 2016XX75 and it held up to a point. It split at the seam and the insert went into the shaft and the point broke off.

The other was a ICS hunter and the arrow broke off at the back end of the footing just as I thought it would

I have a few more little project in the works and will be offering a footing service on all the arrows I make. I will finalize that later in an another post when I have it all worked out.
I will have more tested this weekend, heading out in the mourning to try out a few things and get some more supplies and samples.

Anyone that wants to see anything let me know. I have so many lost and found arrows and cut offs from the Archery Pro shop I am sure I can come up with something for you guys.

This next test will be at things we do hit more often then ROCKS. STAY TUNNED GOING TO TRY VIDEO!!

I am not surprised at all on those two shafts.  I could have predicted the results.  Try a MFX, grizzly, GT trad, and a CX heritage.  I might be near a rock of sufficient size to try a GT and CX 150 this weekend.

How about some angled impacts with interest to illustrate steel vs. aluminum adapter failures? Would also like to see if adapters break in front of the footing or the shaft breaks behind the footing on the angled impacts.
I can tell you I easily broke FMJs behind the brass inserts on angled impacts.
