ELK HUNT...ready, set, go.
« on: August 24, 2007, 01:48:00 PM »
Well 6 days and I'm busting at the seams. I have tortured my body (not near enough), my pack with 5 days food is a "light"44 lbs, and my arrows are flying like darts.

Trouble is I have another 6 days of watching the clock, repacking my gear, and driving my wife and employees crazy! I work in health care and I'm finding ANY excuse to talk to ANYBODY (including 90 year-old grandmothers there to get their blood pressure meds filled) about hunting elk or backpacking. I need some serious help...the only way to fix it will be that 610 grains of elk medicine I plan on painting red!!! Good luck to everybody that is climbing the walls like me.

Hey, cool stuff man.  I'm excited for you!  Think of this time as making it that much better when you finally arrive.  Best of luck this season.  Cheers, Matt

Suckers! When I shut this machine off, within minutes, I drive to town for a nice greasy fast-food chicken lunch, then an hour into the mountains, strap on the 50# duffel bag lashed to the meat frame-pack ... and away I go for a few days. This ain't the Big Backpack Hunt, which comes in mid Sept., but just an opening weekend tune-up. For the first time in 13 years I'm not meat hunting this year, but "trophy" hunting. Which means it has to be bigger than the Biggie I got back in '94. This is a good ploy to allow me to hunt through the entire season. Your turns will come, but mine is NOW! Think of me tonight, up there at 10,000' camped alone in a tiny hidden meadow with a tiny creek gurgling by, bourbon-and-branch in hand, bears rustling off in the dark woods, maybe an early bugle or two. Ho!

Oh Dave, that's just cruel man!  I've got nineteen more days to suffer through this and here you go painting pictures like that in my head...
Have a great weekend!

Dave, that was just cruel... ;)  I'll be expecting some cool pics from you fellas in a couple of weeks. I hope to add to the stories with one of my own. Dave I'm still meat huntin'. I've only killed 2 elk in 6 years, so when I get as old as you perhaps I'll "trophy" hunt. I figure I've got at least another 20 years or so:) GOOD LUCK TO ALL!

Hey Dave, you shouldn't do that to a guy that still has 7 days until he leaves for NW Colorado.  I'm about to bounce off the walls already, there's no telling what I'll be like in the middle of next week.  Good luck to everyone heading out in the coming weeks.  BOB

Opener tomorrow, but I wont be out until Monday, due to a promised trip with my wife this weekend.  I will be hunting Roosies about 45 minutes from my house.  Hopefully I can find the bull that made the huge rubs I found yesterday morning.  720 grains of carbon and Zwickey waiting for the first bull within range.

Hey Scott, I'm just 6 days behind you and the arrows you sold me are ready as well as I. This is my first traditional hunt and I am siked. I have prepared for this all year. Don't forget to post pics. Good luck to everyone. John

Elk chaser, What luck have you had with the 605 grain arrow on elk.  I have a setup that is 605 grains from my 64# Widow.  I also have a 770 grain arrow that I am shooting well but of course not quite as flat as the 605 gr. arrow. How has it worked for you?
