Deer in velvet hunts - help!!
« on: March 10, 2013, 07:28:00 PM »
Always been one of my desires to take a whitetail buck in velvet.  I know that Kentucky and South Carolina both start their deer seasons early enough for this opportunity.  Does anyone out there have any advice or can you recommend an outfitter who offers these hunts that "understands" the trad archer limitations?

Montana, Wyoming and some other western states offer some early hunts.

Wyoming is generally a few days earlier than MT since WY always starts 1 Sep.  They also have a ton of whitetails in some of the units.  Mostly they are those one the eastern side.

Much of MT has been hammered by Bluetongue and EHD.   Will be a few years before they recover.

WY is also much easier to get a tag for whitetail.

North Dakota is an over the counter tag opening noon August 31st.  At least it used to.  I killed a buck in velvet there.  Great state for whitetails.

Thanks, guys!  As a hunter from Virginia, do any of you have any experience with outfitters who offer velvet whitetail hunts?

Eastern WA has some nice whitetails. It isn't Iowa, but there are some pretty big deer there.  When I lived there the season started in August.  You have the bonus of mule deer in velvet on the same land at the same time as well.

Delaware is hit or miss for me.  A few times I had my target buck come in on opening day or day after and shed velvet already.  No matter how hard I try I just can't get that velvet buck monkey off my back.
