Carbon ???
« on: March 11, 2013, 05:56:00 AM »
OK Carbon guys, I got full length Cabela's Stalker Extreme 65-80 with 100 gr brass inserts. I shoot a Northern Mist Classic 68" 63 @ 27" , I pull 27", what do I need to do to make these shoot ? I have tried 125 gr tips to 400 gr and still get bad flight .

Well I checked the Cabela's catalog and I think these are about a 340 spin. Are you getting and up/down kick or a side to side kick? As you added more weight how did the flight change? Have you tried shoooting bare shaft?

Not sure the centre-cut of your bow, but assuming 1/4 before centre then I would go for 29.5" carbon length with 285 total up front.

i think each 1/8th of centre cut requires a 50gr compensation, as does each 1/2" of carbon length change

I set my nocking point 3/8 high

cheers

Are you bare shafting?  How does it fly?  Maybe you are too weak from the start and just getting weaker as you add weight.  Could need to do some cutting.

I am not familiar with that shaft or you bow center cut.  Assuming a 340 shaft and ¼” out from center, I  would think you could get that to work with some point weight as far as spine goes.  However, I find that I get tune issues with a lot of extra shaft overhang and HFOC.  Some people get them to tune fine, but I don't.  200-300 gr point weight with a 5” plus overhang cause the shaft to whip around too much for me I think.

I am not sure what the GPI on that shaft is, but I would think it is kind of a light arrow for you with only 225 point weight.  A CE 250 could be a good arrow for you for spine, shaft weight, and final arrow weight. Could get you an arrow down more in the 28-29” range with 275 gr. up from and around 10 gpp.

A Cabela's Stalker Extreme 65/80 has a .340 spine, thats a pretty stiff arrow for a bow cut-off center. You may not get good flight even at full length and no matter how much weight you have upfront.I've found on longbows cut-off center can give you false reading with a stiff carbon.Carbon arrows recover so much quicker from the paradox then other arrow materials. They will in effect bounce off the riser instead of flexing around it.You may need to go down to a .400 spine and load up the front with a 100 gr. insert and see how they will fly.I found on my 55#@27 Hill it likes a weaker spine,I shoot a .500 spine carbon with 100 gr. insert and 145 gr. point.Your bow is 8# heavier then my Hill, you may not ever get good flight with a .340 spine carbon with your bow that is cut-off center. It probably gets worse the more weight you add upfront.

I'll bet you're too stiff.

Carbon shafts continue to amaze me with the amount of tip weight they can absorb.

Combination of a bow not cut to center and a 27" draw (like mine) and that shaft is way too stiff even full length. Even at 63#.

I would think the 65-80s could be made t0 shoot. In my experience carbon really starts to do funny things once past 31"s and different things begin to apply. I would say cut down believe it or not to 30"s and than try 350-400 grains up front, I bet you will be surprised. Maybe 31"s and you may get away with 325 but again at 31"s I throw most of how I tune out the window as they do not recover no where near as quick even just that extra 1" over 30"s makes a bug difference. Been playing around with them for close to 17 years now and have it pretty much figured out, but not all of it!!  :bigsmyl:   Shawn

Steve's standard shelf cut is +3/16 + leather. My NM are 55 & 57 @29" (I draw 29.25")and CX150 30.5 with 250 tip flies beautifull, had some 29.5" and could run 300g on the front. Also used to shoot MFX400 full length with 300g up front.

With that shelf cut I believe there is a point that it is just too stiff and you cant add enough weight.

What are you running for a brace height?

Eric

6 1/2 brace, I'd like to use a 100 gr insert and 235-240 up front. I quess I should just trade for 55-75's.
