recommend spines for test kit please!
« on: March 21, 2013, 11:14:00 AM »
Im almost finished with my bamboo backed ipe longbow, (you can see the buildalong on the bowyer's bench) and i need to order a test kit for arrows. I know all my arrows i already have will be to stiff, because all my bows are centershot, and this one is not. its 53# @ 28", I draw 28". handle is going to be 3/4 - 7/8" wide with a leather rest glued on under the handle wrap. so 3/8" or so from center. what spine ranges should i include in my kit?

dynamic spine calculator says 45# for amo static spine. in the past i have usually ended up stiffer than what that says, by up to 10 lbs. so im thinking 40-45, 45-50, 50-55, and 55-60 (if i get 4 spines in the kit, stop at 55 if only 3) does this seem about right? i want to use 125 gr tips, but i have some 145s laying around too.

I think you are on track with the spines listed. Because of the bow's shelf being +3/8" it will require a lighter spined shaft, especially if you go to the 145gr points. With the 125gr points I think the 45/50's will work just fine.

You won't need the 55/60 and I have doubts about the 50/55's as well from how you have described the bow and shelf cut. I'm thinking get 40/45 and 45/50. Basically what snag said.
