Muzzy/Thunderhead type broadhead experiences?
« on: March 21, 2013, 06:18:00 PM »
I realize most here would not consider hunting deer with anything but COC broadheads.

Still, I would like to read about successes as well as failures using these type heads (replaceable blade....e.g.-Muzzys and Thunderheads) for deer hunting.

Thanks for sharing your experiences, Skychief.

I haven't used them out of my recurve (yet)  but used them a lot  a lot with my compounds excellent heads and a great price. That said  I would not hesitate to use them I'll bet most of us can't  put an edge on as keen as a replaceable blade from a thunder head or a muzzy. I fact the Man who invented muzzy  was a trad hunter. I have seen Johm mussachia use muzzy 3 blades with his recurve on muzzys bad to the bone a I watched him take deer bear turkey caribou hogs etc.... They work,

Many folks still use the Thunderheads and Muzzy 3-4 blades heads with good results. Shot placement and good arrow tuning still play the most important role no matter what is being used!

Although now I'm shooting the Muzzy Phantoms, I've had good luck with the Muzzy four blades with the trocar tip in the past.  I also sharpened the trocar on a flat stone.

Boy Ryan.....I guess you did have some good luck! Can I ask what weight you were shooting then?

I primarily hunt with 53lbs @ 26" with an arrow just over 500grs.  Those were shot with the 145gr four blade Muzzy's with the trocar tips.  Shot a few critters with those heads.

Ryan great showing!!

Thunderhead / Muzzy: we like em a lot - it is true I mostly use Sharks but we have had zero problems and excellent success with thunderheads and muzzys hosting guests.

I also have used the muzzy and the thunderheads almost exclusively in non-tradional bows. Never had a single problem. I'd sharpen the trocar for a stickbow on the muzzy, and just sharpen to a good point on the thunderheads.

They're both solid heads.

I prefer the muzzy for a four blade, and the thunderhead for a three blade.

The muzzy 3 blade ferrule is weaker than the 4 blade because the cutout for the blades is wider on teh 3 blade due to the way the blades overlap when teh head is assembled. I had one break on a rock. 4 blade or thunderhead ferrules seem pretty bulletproof.

Did anyone here mention yet that muzzy and thunderheads are some of the only replaceable blade heads that still come in a 6 pack and can be had for around $30?

I refuse to spend big money on a head when a cheap one is perfectly good, and when a sharpened rock would work too.

With all this said, I'm considering switching to all COC heads for all my setups. I shoudl just buy a case of WW or something ...

I have shot Thunderheads off and on for years without any problems. Both the two and three blade models. The whitetail in my Avatar was taken with a 125 grn 3 bladeThunderhead. THey work great on turkeys too ! I have never had a tuning issue with them either ....

I'm a fanatic with respects to sharpness so a few trips in and out of my quiver I touch my Thunderhead blades up on an oilstone until shave sharp. They'll drain a hog in a hurry with a well placed shot. I dont use them exclusively but do often.

I have killed a ton of critters with Thunderhead 125's with my stickbows! Pigs, deer, javis and such. I am "sharpening challenged" and my theory was I would rather have a sharp Thunderhead than a not-so-sharp COC head. I now use GK COC heads and have figured out how to get them hunting sharp (THANKS KME), but I have used the Thunderhead in the past with great success.
