Bear Takedown Grips and Green Stripe
« on: April 03, 2013, 04:18:00 PM »
Hello all,
Forgive me if this is the wrong place and please tell me where I need to go.
I would like ot know how to tell the difference in narrow grip and thick grip on Bear Kodiak Takedowns. Is there are certain year/s model that has the narrow grip. Also is the sometimes referred to "Green Stripe" takedown a narrow grip or a thick grip? Is the new 2013 Bear Kodiak Takedown a narrow or thick grip style?

I'm in search of a LH green Stripe with rose oak limbs 45lb. I'd like more clarification on my the rose oak limbs are noted to be the best.
Any help on this is much appreciated.
thanks,
Kyle

Kyle,I am a lefty, sorry none of my Bear TDs is going anywhere, and the Green Stipe has for sure a narrow grip, not as much as the later Brown Stripe models, that I don't care for.I don't know really much about the Grey and Bubinga models since I like the older ones.IMHO the really best were the Type 1 and 2 with the GS close seconds.
I own also 3 sets of Rose Oak limbs and they are some of the best limbs you can buy, fast, quiet and forgiving. But I ain't tryed all the rest.I am sure that the RER and Black River are good too, maybe I'll try some Borders in the future, but I don't see really the need to change my Brandon's limbs.

Well looks like I have a big learning curve. I'm settled on the Rose Oak Limbs after all the reviews I've seen, like you said others are out there and I'm sure they are good too, just seems the rose oaks pop up in discussion more often.
I am looking for a narrow grip, it's my shooting style. Can you tell me the year model to look for in the brown stripe. Also is hte Type 1 and 2 narrow or as narrow as the GS? Yes LH is hard to find on top of the takedown so I have my work cut out for me. I'm wanting to end up with a 60" bow so I'm thinking the A riser with Number 1 limbs. I'll order aftermarket limbs but I'm set on finding a riser even if it is the new one, I just don't want the bulky wide hand one. If the new one's are narrow and any one knows what they compare to please let me know.
thanks again,
Kyle

The Green Stripe as Felix says has a narrower grip than the type 1 or 2 which have a beefy grip also the Supreme T/D has a narrow grip if you can find one for sale. Do not know about the newer models and have no experience with the aftermarket limbs.

The greyish black dymondwood version of about 2011 has a beefy grip while the 2012 bubinga has the narrow grip.  My green stripe of the 80's has the narrow grip too.

I currently have a one piece bear like this one:  http://di1-1.shoppingshadow.com/images/pi/b4/4c/c0/31083805-450x450-0-0_Bear+Fred+Bear+Super+Kodiak+Recurve+Bow+Right+Hand.jpg

Can anyone compare the grips of the Green Stripe and the Brown Stripe to this bow, maybe even the type 1 and 2 grips.

Once again just getting some feedback is awesome so thank you,
Kyle

Blackhawk how would you compare the 2012 Bubinga riser to the green stripe in the grip area?
thanks,

You are wrong the A riser with #1 limbs makes a 56" bow! Or you take a A riser with #3 limbs or a B riser and #1 limbs.
For what I have seen,a couple that I bought for some friends of mine the Green Stripe handle is pretty close to the Bubinga, for sure something that you can like and easily find since they are in current production.
About the early ones they are a little bit different one from the other since they were refinished by hand from different bowyers.
I like myself the small grips but you can't go wrong with a Type 1 or 2 belive me,the problem is they are very rare and pricey.
As Danny said the Supreme is one of the best loking and shooting one you can own,but once again very rare.If you are in the hurry look for the Bubinga otherwise wait for a Green Stripe.

Personally I like the green stripe grip and find that 2012 grips are alot closer to that era.  But that said, if you attend a large  trad shoot that Bear archery attends with their display, and have vendors selling Bear bows.  You'll find quite a bit of difference in grips of the same bow type.  Maybe even more so on the take downs.

ju5th3r3 I think you find them quite similar.  And actually like the palm area better.

Kyle, I usually don't post because we all see things differently but here you go IMHO. I have 18 takedowns so that's where my feedback comes from. I'll start with calling the green stripe the "normal/average" size grip. That makes the type1 much thicker. I have had both A & B newer diamondwood risers. My fav is the B 2011, close to the greenstripe but a litte bigger. The narrowest riser I have held is the new bubinga handles. Not my style but a lot of people like them. I have three type ones (2As & 1B), like the way they shoot but my preference is Still the greenstripe to shoot everyday behind the diamondwood. I also have an A 2008 riser. It is more narrow than the greenstripe. Confused enough? That's why shoot before buying unless you plan to collect. Also I really like the mag risers #2 grip.

Limbs, I have old, new and aftermarket. I like them all but for performance don't discount the new FF bear limbs some compare but really don't outshoot through chronograph .

Thanks to everyone so far.
So the new bubinga is narrow, that's great. As much as I would like to collect, it seems as if to have one that is narrow and fits the bear take down inch I need to go with the new one with bear limbs and then as shooting it I can start looking for the collectibles.
I just didn't want to order new one and get a bulky grip, every one kept referring to narrow grip as green stripe.
Thanks and also I'll go with B riser #1 limbs, unless anyone has shot both combinations to make 60" and has better input.
Thanks,
Kyle

The bubinga is possibly thinner than the green stripe, but they are definitely close.

Keep in mind there are vendors out there selling the new bubinga that will let you return the bow for refund.
