Do you shoot through the screens?
« on: April 13, 2013, 08:26:00 PM »
New to hunting out of a ground blind and new to turkey hunting and wondering what most of you do.  Do you shoot through the screens or do you just leave them open?  I'm using a Barronett Big Mike blind.  Thanks.

As long as you dress in black or very dark colors leaving the windows open makes little difference to the turkeys. Deer on the other hand do not seem to like the black holes created when the screens are not used. Shawn

Im not familiar with that blind, but I use the Predator Den by Primos.  I use the shoot through screens.  They don't seem to effect the arrow flight. Good Luck

I shoot through the screen as well. I like it because I can re-adjust my position if need be and not get made so easy. Just be certain you have them TIGHT. Then your arrows will have no issues on the way through. rat'

I have done both. Though not a turkey expert I have seen deer close very close. Shot one at near four yards through the screen. My advice is practice a lot through it.

I shot through them with a different type of bow with good results.  However, I'm  not going to even try it with my recurve. I'm going to leave the window I expect to shoot through open and be blacked out inside.

I have with no issues, but your bow and arrow need to be reasonably well tuned.  Shooting through some paper at the same distance as you shoot through your screens is a good test.  Your broadhead will cut plenty of hole for your shaft and feathers to clear as long as your tune is reasonable. .

My only issue with shooting through screen is not arrow flight, but depth perception.  It messes with me a lot.  Not a big issue in bright light, but hard for me in low light early, late, and in the woods early season with the leaves all on.  Not so bad for turkeys, but then as said by others, turkeys don’t care that much about the black hole so I don’t use the screens most of the time for them.  For dear I tend to tree stand hunt or make sure the blind is brushed well and they keep the screens off my main hunting shot openings.

I shot a 21 pound gobbler this morning through the mesh of my double bull matrix this morning. I have done this several times. He was about 8 or 9 feet away when I drew and he didn't know a thing until the treeshark went through him.LCH

At 8' you could shoot through another turkey first and kill a bird without much noticeable affect on your arrow.

I like the screens because the game can't see you move. If you don't use them be sure to black everything out and set the blind where the sun won't shine in. If you use a cut on contact broadhead it will not effect arrow flight.LCH

I like the freedom of movement the mesh gives me.....especially for turkeys!

Dont hesitate to shoot thru....no worries at all. It takes some getting used to though at first...I dont really like having the screen in front of me while I watch outside, but the effects of being totally hidden cannot be denied...

Most know this but be careful not to have windows opened on both sides of you.  For example, in front and behind you allow the bird to see your movement very easily.
